Default ATI Radeon 4870X2

Has anyone gotten 2D acceleration working with this card on any BSD or Linux system?

[Most interested in NetBSD here. I just want to dump windows for every day stuff on this PC.]

Does the generic "ati" driver work?

I couldn't get any of the ATI drivers to work with it maybe 4+ months ago.

I was asking on #debian and #netbsd last night and it appears this card, as well as the previous card in the same line, fail to work. It also seems its not great in Windows, either.

Ya I had problems with it in Vista but it's working fine in XP64.

Is there a chance no working driver will be implemented for this card in the near future?

What are some high end cards that work well with NetBSD? Is Nvidia more supportive in this respect?

nVidia is never more supported, they do not release documentation.. nor do they release open source drivers.

ATI (now owned by AMD..) is releasing documentation for newer chipsets, but it takes time for developers to create a working driver.

Consider trying a latest version of NetBSD or OpenBSD, try the radeonhd driver.. or the generic radeon driver.

Newer chipsets lack actual 2D acceleration hardware anymore, it's all done through the 3D electronics.. this can complicate things a bit.

Hope that helps..

The video card with multiple GPUs are particularly tricky to program, as well.

However, according to one of the primary developers of the radeon driver, the 4870X2 is supported. You will only get basic 2D acceleration via shadowfb (no EXA or Xv support), but it should work.
