Default Arch Linux – "It is what you make it"

From http://h-online.com/-1343717

Many Linux distributions have taken the path of easy GUI-based installation, in order to appeal to a broader mix of users. But not Arch Linux, which emphasises simplicity of technical complexity over general usability.

Arch Linux is a lightweight Linux distribution optimised for i686 and x86-64 architectures. Arch features a BSD-style init system and its own pacman package manager, and uses a rolling-release development model rather than issuing fixed releases.

Like Gentoo, Arch is an operating system for more adventurous users who aren't afraid to get under the hood and get familiar with the internal workings of their system, and want to understand how things work. Both Arch and Gentoo have been influenced by the BSDs, and both have their own package and build management systems which owe something to FreeBSD's ports system.

The rolling release model, a consequence of the pacman package manager, at first glance seems to be a setup for periodic system breakage but in practice it rarely happens.

I had thoughts that pacman could be made to work with the BSD's, particularly OpenBSD current, as it encourages the use of binary packages. Arch linux also has a system of 'build scripts' that users can submit for software that is not in the official repositories, which also works well.

A good objective critic about Arch Linux:

AUR is a poor substitute for ports.

pacman is fine, but what does it provide that pkg_add doesn't?

# pacman -Syu
essentially gets you to the same place as
1) Downloading and Booting /bsd.rd to do an update
2) sysmerge (recently in and out of /bsd.rd)
3) pkg_add -ui

with a single command.

I appreciate a separation of the base system from userland, although I suppose things like oss and the kernel can be blacklisted from automatic updating on Arch.
