Default GDM Problems

I have installed the base 4.7 system, plus the necessary Gnome packages for a functional desktop.

When I boot the system, the GDM login box appears - but wont allow me to type any thing in.

I must click on remote login via xdmcp - click cancel and then go back to the main GDM login screen. I can then type in my login information.

When I do login with GDM - this does not directly bring me to the Gnome Desktop, it brings me to the fvwm window manager with a xterm box. I must type gnome-session using xterm to open the Gnome Desktop.

Once I do arrive at the Gnome Desktop, it is not using Metacity - it is using fvwm.

I installed the amd64 version of OpenBSD 4.7 on a Gateway laptop.

I have updated the /etc/rc.local file.

I would greatly appreciate any help solving this problem.

I don't use Gnome. So this may not help:

You have not stated whether or not you have read /usr/local/share/doc/gnome-session/README.OpenBSD, or, whether you have run gdmsetup. From my recollection, a missing toolset listed as recommeded in the README, or, not running gdmsetup, can cause difficulties.

I have this file on my $HOME:
Code:
$ cat ~/.dmrc
[Desktop]
Session=gnome

1. Did you run gdmsetup, as recommended?

2. Which packages from the OpenBSD.README recommended list did you install? The output from "pkg_info" will tell you.

3. Do you have an .xsession file? (I don't use Gnome or GDM, so I do not know if your .dmrc file is examined if you do not have an .xsession file.)
When using the built in XDM (which GDM or KDM can replace) the user merely needs to have an .xsession file that contains 'exec /usr/local/bin/gnome-session'. To start Gnome with startx from a shell, the user needs the same thing in .xinitrc.
A working Gnome environment on OpenBSD 4.7-release for i386 or adm64 architectures can be downloaded from the link in my signature. It uses XDM and .xsession.

You can check my tutorial for installing Gnome and GDM from scratch here : hxxp://www.gabsoftware.com/tips/installing-gnome-desktop-and-gnome-display-manager-on-openbsd-4-7/

Curiously, I had the same keyboard problems and used the same workarround. This get fixed once you installed all the required packages.
