Default SYSLOG disappearance

Hello,

It seems as if I have unknowingly lost my syslog at /var/adm/SYSLOG, it could have occurred sometime ago after my upgrade to O/S 6.0.

Looking at /etc/syslog.conf I couldn't find any corrective action to take.

Tried running from the command line
machine 1744% ls /var/adm/
ls: /var/adm/: No such file or directory
machine 1745% /usr/sbin/syslogd
syslogd: child pid 99237 exited with return code 1
machine 1746% ps -waux | grep SYSLOG
Could someone say what could have caused this and if it is indicative of some pending problem?

Thanks!

Is this FreeBSD? Did you set up some custom logging to that file at some point?

If not, I think you want /var/log/messages.

Yes! /var/log/messages is there and a host of other log files as expected in the upper directory '/var/log'. Now I am installing a program that is referencing
/var/log/syslog
· /var/adm/SYSLOG
for logging and that's how I recognized the missing /var/adm/ directory and remembered the SYSLOG, crash?core etc. Was wondering If I cloberred something during the installation or have they been removed in the V 6.x O/S. If they are supposed to be there, how do I restore them?

Thanks

FreeBSD doesn't have a /var/adm/ directory, nor does it have a /var/log/syslog.

All configuration for syslog is handled by /etc/syslog.conf.

Are you sure this is a FreeBSD system? What software are you using that references /var/adm? How is it installed?

We need more info in order to be helpful.

/var/adm is found on a Solaris system (and, I want to say AIX, but don't quote me on that). Are you perhaps installing something that is expecting to be on a Solaris system? Or are you on a Solaris system and accidentally posted to the wrong section? Or maybe you're a Solaris admin new to the BSD world (old habits die hard )?

MIA CULPA
I've been working on FreeBSD, IRIX and Solaris platforms and environments. I've installing a package and the instructions documents were not too concise on the steps for each platform, so when they mentioned /var/adm/SYSLOG and FreeBSD, it struck a familiar chord, albeit the wrong one.
