Maybe some kind of 'exam' might be fun. Perhaps 10 or so questions per level to gauge your knowledge and assign your rank? Just an idea.
You've hit the nail on the head - the problem is how to get a computer to properly evaluate user knowledge without, as another poster mentioned, some form of advanced AI. I think this whole thread is more-or-less a search to solve that problem, or at least compromise on an approach that is livable.

I do like your idea of an exam. DaemonForums Certified Users - I like it!

I view this new rank as Operating system Elitism and therefore believe the currnet ranking should be kept, and they are removed i will leave and therein denounce damonforms as Elitist community which is not accepting of new user in the lowest terms of the term Community Driven Software!!

Wow, I'm speechless.

I usually came to BSDForums because the advice is grounded and sound, but this talk about administering tests is scary. I think I can figure out what is reasonable information, and if I can't, well maybe I can learn something from following really bad advice.

I can assure you that there will never be any tests

I see no problem with the one marked in the poll as Kienja's System or the Unix one. Although certain settings could be considered offensive to some, it is generally nice to see a sense of humour !

Forum ranks have no meaning, they just show how prolific a poster you are, or sometimes how old your membership is. They have no concept of peoples 'ranking', this is not an Army it is a forum.

People make to big a deal about little stuff like this, I think this thread has some what, outlived it's usefulness.

Be careful of reading post it notes on the side of bike sheds.

How about locking this thread? Hasn't it long ago passed the point of possessing any value?

While it may not measure actual proficiency (other than with pressing a post button), I think it is a natural psychological reaction to associate a higher post count with higher knowledge - but I'm no psychologist or sociologist.

I think it's part of the fun of a community forum that goes beyond the closed boundaries of what the forum's discussional purpose is.

If you do not care about this forum's ranking system, then stay away from this thread.

You answer:
Yes, this thread is still relevant. We will still make a decision based on the poll results. For those who think the rank system is not important, again, I implore those people: Go to another thread.
