Default HP kills TouchPad

I post this only because a number of posters here present issues using HP hardware either directly due to the hardware itself or because it just happened to be the hardware used when (unrelated) problems arose:

So hey, gang. I have a name Hewlett-Packard can use for their new PC company spin-off if they so choose to do so -- Compaq.

Kind of sad to see HP hiving off their hardware division, it has so much history behind it.

As for tablets, I hope RIM's Playbook suffers the same fate. Any device that's sold under the false-advertising that "Flash is the best part of the Internet" deserves to be put out of its misery.

I'm avoiding this whole tablet/smartphone phase that society is going through, I won't lose any sleep over this.

I see the local retailers are almost giving these things away now. E.g., the 16GB Touchpad was $450, now $99.

Wish they would EOL their laptops and do this.

Our senior management just a few weeks ago demanded (well claimed that they need TouchPads) and we got 40 or 50 in last week and I just downloaded the SDK and was looking into programming these things!

Funny how having an exclusive corporate contract with HP that we had to find out about this via the web and not HP itself. Of course IBM did the same thing to us before selling to Lenovo....

This was different, the PC/Laptop branch didn't get killed off, in fact, IBM still did support in the US for a few years.

HP just kills the whole platform. Have a nice day.

It's a shame, because it wasn't a *bad* platform.

I should clarify...by same thing...I meant that IBM sold us a bunch of workstations and printers that within 1 year we could not get parts or support for and ended up switching back to HP.

And the potential next step ...

HP rumored to be combining PC and printer businesses.

I know my memory is fading as I age...but didn't they used to be combined? And why is it so hard right now to buy an HP printer and computer together?

I'm not sure what the history of the two divisions is either. I also wondered how much "synergy" they can get when printers are practically being given away free already. Maybe they can reduce some overhead costs by combining? Maybe it's just management flailing in a different direction trying to look like they're making a positive difference?
