Default Xorg config

Greetings all, i have a bit of a problem with choppy video playback, glxgears gives me barely 60FPS at any time, under Ubuntu I get almost 1000FPS, even in a virtual machine i get from 250-400FPS.

I have an older xorg.conf file from Linux, (was going to piece it together again) but would prefer a clean fresh from scratch xorg.conf for OpenBSD.

I do realize this is a lower end power saving Intel video card, but am expecting much better performance from it. Any suggestions or tips on improving my video performance is much appreciated, thx.

Well from the glxinfo output you can see the following,
OpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer

You can also see that Xorg fails to open the DRM interface:
Code:
drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/drm0
drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (Operation not permitted)
drmOpenDevice: Open failed
drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/drm0
drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (Operation not permitted)
drmOpenDevice: Open failed
[drm] failed to load kernel module "i915"
(EE) [drm] drmOpen failed.
(EE) intel(0): [dri] DRIScreenInit failed. Disabling DRI.
As you can see, you're not using hardware acceleration.

You must make sure your user is in the wheel group, /dev/drm0 has no world read/write permissions.

Good stuff BSDfan666, i was aware that i was not 3d accelerating at all and oddly enough the user is in the wheel group.

I am suspecting sometype of driver issue, i believe (on this install) that i tried installing a different driver for my Intel video card, i am actually typing this response from a Windoz 7 install (ooh tsk tsk on me).

I also went over the power management settings just in case it was affecting video performace, which it was not, sadly i have gotten it up to almost 80 FPS but it is still unacceptable.

Will try a fresh install of X, see how that goes, thx for input.

So after a fresh install of 4.6 i386, i have cleared up those prior errors concerning DRI not loading and also the OpenGL renderer.

Code:
drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/drm0
drmOpenDevice: open result is 13, (OK)
drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/drm0
drmOpenDevice: open result is 13, (OK)
drmOpenByBusid: Searching for BusID pci:0000:00:02.0
drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/drm0
drmOpenDevice: open result is 13, (OK)
drmOpenByBusid: drmOpenMinor returns 13
drmOpenByBusid: drmGetBusid reports pci:0000:00:02.0
Code:
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Mobile Intel® GM45 Express Chipset 20090418 2009Q1 x86/MMX/SSE2
I still get this when i run glxgears

Code:
glxgears
Failed to initialize GEM. Falling back to classic.
Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be
approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.
323 frames in 5.0 seconds = 64.589 FPS
299 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.619 FPS
299 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.619 FPS
299 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.619 FPS
299 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.619 FPS
I have googled this error with no luck, also check wiki.x.org and did not find anything helpful, all i seem to find is that it has been "fixed" with the newest driver .... all for Linux's that is.

I searched the @misc mailing lists as well for that error, i recall something about a newer Intel driver, of course the mailing lists are down right now, (7am) YAY !!!! Anybody have any info concerning this error under OpenBSD 4.6 with KDE 3.5? thx.

So im going to start smoking crack i think .... geez. So i regenerated a new xorg.conf file and edited in my settings and im gettings MUCH more FPS;

Code:
glxgears
1009 frames in 5.0 seconds = 201.711 FPS
1117 frames in 5.0 seconds = 223.368 FPS
1236 frames in 5.0 seconds = 247.119 FPS
1139 frames in 5.0 seconds = 227.629 FPS
1172 frames in 5.0 seconds = 234.296 FPS
1123 frames in 5.0 seconds = 224.554 FPS
1205 frames in 5.0 seconds = 240.969 FPS
I am going to say that it's safe to say that 200+ FPS is pretty good for this Intel driver on KDE 3.5 and OpenBSD 4.6 i386?? seems quite low to me but video playback is MUCH smoother.

Must be sleep time ...

One should never use glxgears as a benchmark, it doesn't paint a fair picture in all cases these days.. try using some real world OpenGL applications.

If you're feel adventurous, there are a wide variety of driver settings that may effect performance.. positively or negatively, you may be able to find something more optimal then the defaults on your specific device.

Isn't it still needed, to setup a device node and it's file permissions in order to get proper 3d acceleration?

The /dev/drm0 node is included in the default installation, no manual intervention should be required in 4.6.

An improperly terminated X might remove the device node somehow, some people have had to go into /dev and run MAKEDEV drm.. it's more likely related to people who upgraded to 4.6 instead of performing a clean install.

No "benchmark" was actually intended, i was just running it quickly to compare the difference (if any) in results of editing the conf file. No real concern for OpenGL applications, to be honest i was just trying to clean up the choppiness on documentaries.

Quote:

I have tried the odd conf setting but am more interested in stability instead of optimum performance, although 60FPS was FAR to choppy for me, the 250FPS or so is very acceptable.

That is good to know, although i always do a fresh install, sheet happens. I actually did NOT have /dev/drm0 existing and just ran MAKEDEV drm in /dev to create it on a fresh install just now.

So after MAKEDEV'ing drm in the /dev directory, i start up X again and run glxgears with the following results;

Quote:
glxgears
Failed to initialize GEM. Falling back to classic.
Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be
approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.
320 frames in 5.0 seconds = 63.926 FPS
299 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.619 FPS
299 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.619 FPS
299 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.620 FPS
299 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.619 FPS
I go back and rm /dev/drm0 and fire up glxgears again and get this;

Quote:
glxgears
1398 frames in 5.0 seconds = 279.522 FPS
1597 frames in 5.0 seconds = 319.389 FPS
1593 frames in 5.0 seconds = 318.448 FPS
1595 frames in 5.0 seconds = 318.856 FPS
1593 frames in 5.0 seconds = 318.426 FPS
1593 frames in 5.0 seconds = 318.513 FPS
So now i am getting 50FPS+ more (synthetic of course) somehow? is this normal behavior? that i am getting crappier performance WITH /dev/drm0 in existance? appreciate any responses, even for pure academic purposes, thx.

The message you see when DRM is used answers your question, I think. With DRM, framerate = monitor refresh rate. I get approx 60fps with a low-end netbook (Atom N270) using an Intel 82945GME.

Take a look in /usr/xenocara/dist/Mesa/progs/xdemos/glxgears.c -- you will see a test for the variable "interval" -- and if greater than zero, the vertical sync warning message is produced.

That certainly makes sense as to exactly 60FPS no matter what i tried, hooey on that vertical sync/lock thing making my documentaries all choppy .... and yes it does answer my question, thx.

That file does not exist in my install, the xenocara directory within /usr is not there at all, i am using 4.6 release, not certain if there is a difference.

No, source code is not part of the base install, it is something admins do post-install, per FAQ 5.

Here is a link to that source code file on the web:

No, source code is not part of the base install, it is something admins do post-install, per FAQ 5.
Well aware of that, also what a .c file is for, this admin puts the source files in /usr/src for some reason though,was just wondering if it was a -current thing and i was missing out on the fun

I was not aware that it was published online, although i did expect it, thx for link to info, i will of course review it

Code:
/**
 * Attempt to determine whether or not the display is synched to vblank.

void

{
   int interval = 0;

#ifdef GLX_MESA_swap_control
   if ((interval <= 0)
       && is_glx_extension_supported(dpy, "GLX_MESA_swap_control")) {
      PFNGLXGETSWAPINTERVALMESAPROC pglXGetSwapIntervalMESA =
          (PFNGLXGETSWAPINTERVALMESAPROC)
          glXGetProcAddressARB((const GLubyte *) "glXGetSwapIntervalMESA");

      interval = (*pglXGetSwapIntervalMESA)();
   }
#endif

#ifdef GLX_SGI_video_sync
   if ((interval <= 0)
       && is_glx_extension_supported(dpy, "GLX_SGI_video_sync")) {
      PFNGLXGETVIDEOSYNCSGIPROC pglXGetVideoSyncSGI =
          (PFNGLXGETVIDEOSYNCSGIPROC)
          glXGetProcAddressARB((const GLubyte *) "glXGetVideoSyncSGI");
      unsigned count;

      if ((*pglXGetVideoSyncSGI)(& count) == 0) {
         interval = (int) count;
      }
   }
#endif

   if (interval > 0) {
      printf("Running synchronized to the vertical refresh.  The framerate should be\n");
      if (interval == 1) {
         printf("approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.\n");
      } else if (interval > 1) {
         printf("approximately 1/%d the monitor refresh rate.\n",
                interval);
      }
   }
