I'm not really familiar enough with Linux kernel development to know what the decision means. Will the floppy driver remain in the tree, and simply no longer be updated? Or will it be pruned from the tree? In the long run perhaps pruning is inevitable, if security problems are discovered with the floppy driver and noone can test patches.
For me, the practical implications are probably quite small. I should be able to keep an off-line computer with a working floppy drive, supported by an existing Linux (or other OS), around for quite a while. I've had a couple of floppy drives die in recent years, but still have about 5 working ones. |
