Default Recommendations for a U.S. Email Service provider

I have reached the breaking point with Earthlink and will be looking for a new provider. I presently pay Earthlink $4.15/month and find that that buys me 51 web cookies+several adds every time I log into web mail. The web cookies are slow to upload on bandwidth that I am paying for separately.

Ideally, I would like to have my own email server set up in a similar fashion to jggimi's but it is not in the cards right now.

I use fastmail.fm, which works pretty well. It's partially based in the U.S. I think.

Fastmail does have US servers. We've steered literally over a hundred customers to them, with very few complaints.

I too have a free fastmail.fm account, but they aren't available for free anymore as far as I know. I also have a free zoho.com account. I don't particularly like their webmail, as it is resource-intensive for me (YMMV), but I find I don't need to use the webmail at all.

You don't need to use their webmail--you can set up your client to access it. (I don't know about the free accounts, but their basic accounts are pretty cheap.)

I use runbox.com (norway), checking it now it does not seem expensive. I don't use it extensively, but for about thirty or less emails per day. ( the freebsd-current mailing list )...

With an .mpoprc (/usr/ports/mail/mpop) one can download emails, which I've only done once...

I've set it up with a non-runbox.com ( one's own domain ) email address. So anything that gets sent to jbtakk@ ..............com arrives there, nothing sent to runbox.com would reach my email, which is a
feature not a bug.

Thanks for the replies. The fastmail lite looks like it will meet my needs at about 20% of what I'm paying Earthlink. $10.00/year and no adds. Any idea how many cookies are uploaded when accessing web mail on fastmail? I tend to clear my browsers cookie cache frequently.

Does fastmail also allow for blocking the *.info domain?

I took a quick look for something like this on my account, and didn't see anything. But that doesn't mean it isn't there somewhere, as I'm not terribly familiar with their web interface due to just occasional use. Maybe if you create a trial account, you can check?

I think something like the following would work:

Accessed through Settings -> Rules -> New Rule.

I'm 50-50 with the web interface at work and mutt at home.

You can set up Sieve rules with Fastmail. The "rules" interface that joekiser showed is a front-end for that, but you can just write the ruleset yourself if you want to.

Yet another +1 for Fastmail although it is now "fastmail.com": they have lost the ".fm". Been using it for years and it is dead reliable, fast and has a calendar and contacts, just like that other "biG" email provider...

I don't use email much, and never for social activities, but prefer something other than one based in the US.

I have an account at safe-mail.net which I like a lot that's based in Israel. You can choose your own interface when you log in and I always use the one which doesn't require scripting.

I have a tutanota.com account, too, and they are known for their encryption. You can choose which server you would like to use at sign up and I have one in Germany.
