Default Intel GMA 3150 not working on X11

Hi,

I have successfully installed OpenBSD on my Asus EeePC 1001p, however I have a problem with it.

It seems the intel driver is not working with Intel GMA 3150.

So, I tried the vesa driver, it works, more or less....
My netbook's native screen resolution is 1024x600, but the vesa driver can only display 800x600, which really limits the already small netbook screen.
No matter what I tried to do in the xorg.conf file it just cant display 1024x600.

Any ideas?

I have a different Asus netbook, also 1024x600. This 1005HA has a 945GME chipset, and works without any xorg.conf file at all.

Our Intel driver dates from 2009 (version 2.9.1), and according to intel(4):

855GM, 865G, 915G, 915GM, 945G, 945GM, 965G, 965Q, 946GZ, 965GM,
945GME, G33, Q33, Q35, G35, GM45, G45, Q45, G43 and G41 chipsets.
It looks like yours is unsupported. You could post your dmesg and your Xorg.0.log, but you may end up being stuck with VESA for now.

Yes, it really seems mine is unsupported.

It seems very unlikely that I will be able to make the intel driver work. So does anybody have any idea whether I can make the vesa driver display 1024x600 resolution?

OpenBSD 4.7 doesn't support GEM/KMS and you need those to use the latest Intel drivers. I have no problem to use GMA 3150 (Atom) with OpenBSD current, 4.8 will support Intel driver 2.9.x.

It is absolutely not true that VESA is limited to 800x600. Now if you are complaining about 3D acceleration and other goodies which usually come with real drivers that is another story and I agree 100% that VESA should be the tool of the last resort.

It seems you have misunderstood me due to my poor communication skills.

I tried to state that VESA is unable to display 1024x600 (let's face it it's a weird resolution, but that's the native resolution of my netbook) no matter what I do. I'm very well aware of the fact that VESA can be used for higher resolution than 800x600, but I have no idea if I can set 1024x600 and how.

Look at the manpage for xrandr(1). The --verbose switch will give information on available modes.

I believe the intel driver needs access to /dev/drm0 in 4.7/4.8, reading the log you posted it's clear that there is a drm problem.

Looking at your dmesg, it's additionally more clear seeing as there is no inteldrm* attaching, this may be fixed in 4.8 so try that.

Yes, I think I should really try 4.8, as VESA driver is slow like hell.

GMA3150 is in the cpu, OpenBSD is so far the only BSD that supports it -- but it's 4.8 only.
