Upgrading linux base distribution?
Hello,
I see there are various linux base systems (for linux emulation) available. Current installed is Code:
linux_base-fc-4_13 Base set of packages needed in Linux mode (for i386/amd64) 1) Flash player for browsers doesn't work at all 2) Google earth renders graphics very slow The question is how exactly to replace the package. Just remove the old one and install the new one? I'm running i386 platform. Also I've heared that applications from ports are build against the default linux base system and I may have problems trying to install them on another base system. Is it critical? |

fc4 is stable, fc6 isn't, and neither is f8, both will probably introduce more issues than they solve, I tried fc6 some time ago because it was needed for skype.
Skype worked, all my other linux applications stopped working ... I could not get back to linux_base-fc4 fast enough. If you want skype, then use net/skype12

I don't have any problems with Skype (version 2.x). My troubles are with flash player and google earth. Ermmm, Wine doesn't have anything common with linux_base, right? My issues there are not related to that, I think...
So, I will take some thoughts before deciding the upgrade. |

VLC
Have you tried: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-freebsd.html

No, I haven't tried VLC. What does it have in common with Flash?
This is really pitty... why there is no flash player for BSD? Due to Adobe licensing issue or something else? |

And the linux emulation isn't complete/good enough to run flash.

Fc4 is the Linux 2.24.* kernel well known and compatibility problems known to
the maintainers. Fc6 is based on the 2.26.* kernel. While it should work, some apps can have 2.24* vs. 2.26.* problems (which are out of the reach of the FreeBSD maintainers). If you absolutely need a Linux app, just install that app on a Linux base system it is known to work on, then qemu or VM to other OSes as you feel like. Further, when you feel like needing different OSes, why install them all on one machine? Sub-199$ machines are plenty, beyond better deals on eBay. Is your Skype problem worth 199$ ?

Now I'm booting FreeBSD for learning purposes, but I'm getting to like it as a desktop and server - both. That's why I'm trying to run my favourite software here and become undependant from Linux. Unfortunately the lack of Flash and VirtualBox keeps me dual booting. Bying another machine is not an option. I already have too much PCs around. |
