The installation of X does not require any additional steps.. but during installation, did you remember to include the Xorg sets? xbase44.tgz, xetc44.tgz.. etc?

If you did install them, creating a new account and typing "xinit" or "startx" is usually enough.

If by "installing" you mean having Xorg start automatically each time you boot your system... I wouldn't recommend that personally, but it can be accomplished by adding xdm_flags="" into your /etc/rc.conf.local file.

Now at this stage I'll need a bit more info..

Hmmm, what's so difficult about it

While you install OpenBSD you were asked which filesets do you want to install. I'm talking about these ones:

http://www.openbsd.org/faq/faq4.html#FilesNeeded

Per default the Xorg-files will not be installed. So you will select xbase44.tgz, xetc44.tgz, xfont44.tgz, xserv44.tgz, xshare44.tgz.

After you have finished the installation and added a user (because you won't use the system as root) just type "startx" at the prompt and you will be welcomed by a minimalistic fvwm (1) windowmanager.

If you already have installed OpenBSD without the X-related files please have a look at this.

If X won't start you will first read this. And if you want more general information about the X window system in OpenBSD you should read this.

Edit: BSDfan 666 was faster!

I may have been faster, but nihonto provided some additional information.. FAQ references which I accidentally omitted.

I meant installing like in FreeBSD when you have the system installed and do
#cd /usr/ports/x11/xorg && make install clean

OpenBSD is not FreeBSD, Xorg is distributed as collection of installable sets.. not as a port or package.

If you're asking how to compile Xorg/Xenocara see FAQ 5.5.

Unless you have a real reason to compile it... just use the released X sets and follow FAQ 4.10.

Note; Accidentally forgetting to install the X sets is a bit stressful.. if it's early in the installation, respectfully consider reinstalling..

If you're willing to following FAQ 4.10, there may be some additional steps to configure X..

1) Edit /etc/sysctl.conf, find the machdep.allowaperture entry.. uncomment it, make sure the value is set to 2.
2) Make sure /dev/xf86 exists:
# cd /dev; sh MAKEDEV xf86

There may be some additional steps, but I can't think of them at the moment.. feel free to reply back if you have any more questions.

Why do you need to reinstall anything. Even if you did install OpenBSD without X and you changed your mind it is not a big deal You can simply boot from the RAM Disk or your original CD and just choose (U)pgrade?
The rest is trivial. Just follow the script and will let you install any additional sets you fancy.
