Default Multicast Routing

Howdy,

Does anyone know whether there is a working multicast router for OpenBSD or FreeBSD?

All the projects seem to be dead and there is nothing in the packages.

Cheers, H.

From OpenBSD's multicast(4) man page:
Quote:
...To start multicast routing, the user must enable multicast forwarding via the sysctl(8) variables net.inet.ip.mforwarding and/or net.inet.ip6.mforwarding, and set multicast to “YES” in rc.conf.local(8). The user must also run a multicast routing capable user-level process, such as mrouted(8)....

Thanks for that note.

However, mrouted, pimd and dvmrpd are no longer in the precompiled packages.

There seems to be a major resurrection going on though:
https://www.openhub.net/p/pimd
https://www.openhub.net/p/smcroute
https://www.openhub.net/p/mrouted

Joachim must be having a boring holiday, since he is now actively working on all of them.

So I need to grab the code and see if it compiles on OpenBSD, then try to figure out how to use it and see which one will do what I need the easiest and simplest.

Sorry for any confusion. The mrouted() multicasting routing daemon is built-in. You will find it in /usr/sbin. Really.

On the other hand, manpages from anything installed from ports or elsewhere do not hold to the same truism.

"mrouted() multicasting routing daemon is in /usr/sbin"

That sure is the one place I did not expect it to be - there seem to be very few people in the world that use multicast routing, so the wild wild web has mostly misinformation.

Thanks!

H.

There was a recent ICMPv6/IGMP monitoring discussion thread on the OpenBSD misc@ mailing list which may be of interest. The TL;DR - there was a port/package, but not any longer.
