Default End Of An Era: Linus Torvalds Marks Floppy Disks ‘Orphaned’

https://fossbytes.com/linus-torvalds...isks-orphaned/
Quote:
He mentions that Jiri, a popular Linux kernel developer, no longer has a working floppy disk, which is why Linux is marking the floppy driver as “orphaned.”
(..)
Linus has ensured that support still exists for USB floppy drives.

Not surprizing I guess, but I still use a floppy once a week. Long live the traditional form of sneaker-net!

I understand their point very well, still I can't t help feeling a little surprised this time: while I seconded their stance when they decided to drop a bunch of obsolete architectures in 2017, I wouldn't lay money on the fact floppies have been factually deprecated and that their current relevance is negligible to the point of deserving being forsaken and publicly consigned to the the list of heirloom technologies.

I'm not really familiar enough with Linux kernel development to know what the decision means. Will the floppy driver remain in the tree, and simply no longer be updated? Or will it be pruned from the tree? In the long run perhaps pruning is inevitable, if security problems are discovered with the floppy driver and noone can test patches.

For me, the practical implications are probably quite small. I should be able to keep an off-line computer with a working floppy drive, supported by an existing Linux (or other OS), around for quite a while. I've had a couple of floppy drives die in recent years, but still have about 5 working ones.
