Default [SOLVED] OpenBSD 5.5 video problem

Hi, recently I decided to give BSD a try and I've chosen OprnBSD. However, it is not working properly. The video was not working, right before the console login prompt my screen would go blank. A user on another forum told me to type "boot -c" and then "disable radeondrm" at the boot prompt. It worked fine but now, under console and Xorg I am stuck with 1280x1024 resolution (on my gentoo box both run at 1920x1080). I would post my dmesg but I am not allowed to (damn).

I am running with a 6670 radeon card

EDIT: I am a complete BSD noob I assume it is some kernel config?

Hello, and welcome!

You cannot include links on your first few posts, but you should be able to include your dmesg inline wrapped in [code] and [/code] tags. Along with your dmesg, post a copy of /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

The reason you can't get full resolution is you have disabled radeondrm, and you're limited to VESA resolutions.

Thanks for the info and the welcoming message
Well, I can't post my Xorg.log right now because I am on my phone

This is my dmesg

Sorry about the numbers lol, hard to fix that on a phone. Anyways I think it is odd that I am having issues, isn't release 5.5 supposed to be radeon compatible? At least that is what I've read.

The ATI 6670 requires firmware. You should see
Code:
radeon-turks_mc
radeon-turks_me
radeon-turks_pfp
radeon-turks_smc
in /etc/firmware.

If you are online you can install with
fw_update(1).

All of them reported unknown driver, I must be doing something wrong
# fw_update -v radeon-turks_pfp radeon-turks_smc
fw_update: radeon-turks_pfp: unknown driver

EDIT: It still doesn't work
# fw_update -v
fw_update: No devices found which need firmware files to be downloaded.

EDIT2: I know it didn't detect because it is not being used right now (I am on VESA), how can I install it manually? I can't find the package

You can download and manually install http://firmware.openbsd.org/firmware...20131002p0.tgz using fw_update. If you download and provide the filename, it will install the firmware package even if the related hardware is unavailable.

Extracted the .tgz file, copied the archives to /etc/firmware and everything works fine so far

I am really in love with OpenBSD, such a sweet system

Sorry. T0 automate the install of firmware you need to use fw_update and you need to use a full /path/to/the/file. Example using a "dot" to indicate a full path beginning with the current directory (untested, just typed...):
Code:
$ ftp http://firmware.openbsd.org/firmware/5.5/radeondrm-firmware-20131002p0.tgz
$ sudo fw_update ./radeondrm-firmware-20131002p0.tgz

When I booted on the system with the copied files I've ran fw_update and it is fine

Code:
# fw_update -v
