Talking OpenBSD Noob Security

Hello all...

(Assume I am a noob, because I am one!)

(Please Note! This is my first day w/ *BSD )

So.. I've managed to get OpenBSD running w/ two of my favorite desktops running earlier today.. but now...

I don't really know what to do to secure my box! should I like use tools like tripwire, chkrootkit/rkhunter, sectool, snort...ect (the BSD-native versions of course) ? all I wish for now is a snapshot of my initial install, as well the two rootkit hunters.

help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

Without digressing into Linux bashing, you will find that the OpenBSD community comes at these issues from a different direction.

Given that the base installation can be considered secure, many of the applications mentioned in your initial message are considered to be gimmicks & bandages for architectural shortcomings.
  • If you are really concerned about security, begin by reading some of the papers & presentations found at the following:

    http://www.openbsd.org/papers/
  • Applications already ported to OpenBSD can be searched for at the following:

    http://openports.se/
  • OpenBSD users who want to really focus on security study pf(4). PF is also covered in the FAQ, & a popular tutorial can b e found at the following:

    http://home.nuug.no/~peter/pf/
As someone new to the OpenBSD culture, you wll save yourself countless hours by taking the time now, while a newbie, & study the project's official FAQ in its entirety:
