Default After an update stable doesn't boot

Hi

I just did a system update and after I've rebooted it doesn't boot up any
more.
All I'm getting is a blank screen with a cursor blinking at the top left
corner of the screen after the POST has finished.

This system was running 7.0-STABLE build in June if I can remember correctly.
I can boot the system with a life cd and get into fixit, but I have no idea what to do next.

Any ideas as to how I can get it back up?

Thanks
hamba

thanks for the quick reply

I followed the normal way of updating /usr/src using csup
then
make buildworld
make buildkernel
make installkernel
mergemaster -p
make installworld
mergemaster
shutdown -r now

Nothing comes up, this is the weird part, I would have though at least to get the loader but it doesn't happen

All I see after the POST is a blinking cursor.

I'm using RELENG_7 for the tag

I am on the freebsd-stable mailling list as well and was asked to give a little more info on fdisk.
Here it is
Code:
# fdisk ad12

parameters extracted from in-core disklabel are:
cylinders=310101 heads=16 sectors/track=63 (1008 blks/cyl)

Figures below won't work with BIOS for partitions not in cyl 1
parameters to be used for BIOS calculations are:
cylinders=310101 heads=16 sectors/track=63 (1008 blks/cyl)

Media sector size is 512
Warning: BIOS sector numbering starts with sector 1
Information from DOS bootblock is:
The data for partition 1 is:
sysid 165 (0xa5),(FreeBSD/NetBSD/386BSD)
    start 63, size 312576642 (152625 Meg), flag 80 (active)
        beg: cyl 0/ head 1/ sector 1;
        end: cyl 1023/ head 254/ sector 63

# boot0cfg -v ad12
# flag start chs type end chs offset size

version=1.0   drive=0x80    mask=0xf   ticks=182
options=packet,update,nosetdrv
default_selection=F1 (Slice 1)
I even tried to reinstall the boot manager using sysinstall with no luck at all

there are 6 disks on it
ad10
ad12
ad18
ad22
ad6
and ad8

ad12 is where I have Freebsd installed on using UFS, the rest of the
drives are all for a zfs pool

can you disconnect power to rest of disks for now....
Let's see what is going on...

do you have zfs support build in kernel?
if not you may want to try to disable it at boot (comment out line in loader.conf)

anyway, disconnecting rest of drives(just plug out power cable), might be good idea to try, for now, while we have no idea, what is going on

no zfs is not compiled into the kernel.
I'll comment them out and unplug the drives.

Lets see what happens

hmm, you know... giving a thought.... it's not zfs fault....
kernel is only loaded after boot menu.... which doesn't appear...
however disconnect disks

Now plug each drive one by one, and see which drive causes problems....

ah ha

the problem looks like it's coming from the pci raid controller
All the internal drives are working fine but as soon as I plug in a drive on the raid controler all the weirdness starts again.

thanks for the help

yeah I know and that the controller doesn't have any drives assigned for booting
I had a look and I can't even see an option on the controller to set the drives for booting

one more question

how will zfs handle it if I changed the raid controller on this box?

I went into the raid controllers bios and removed everything and rebooted.
Now FreeBSD is booting the way it should and zfs is still working the way it always have

Thanks for the help, now I can finally go home and get some sleep

Have a good night
