http://lmgtfy.com/?q=d-link+dir+300+manual I have no knowledge of your product, but most likely it blocks by port, not by application. It may also allow you to block by IP address. Again, consult the manual for what features are available. Torrents typically used port 6881, but may use 6882-6999. My suggestion would be to block this entire range. Other information can be found with a search engine about blocking Internet Download Manager. Sifting through the links posted below is a start: http://lmgtfy.com/?q=blocking+internet+download+manager |

A BitTorrent client can be configured to use any port range, even a single port.. and this custom port can be reported to torrent trackers and work just fine.
I do believe that filtering is the wrong solution to the problem, you need to define a written or verbal usage policy.. and punish violators accordingly, even if that means removing access permanently. |

Bit torrents have defined a protocol for itself such that there are common ports associated to the protocol.
Internet Download Manager is simply an application. You will not find ports specifically associated with it, however, it will most likely use common ports in downloading files (one possibility being ftp...). What you need to do is find out what ports it uses either by doing a lot of online research, or learn to use a packet-sniffing tool such as Wireshark and determine what ports are used yourself. As for BSDfan666's suggestion of changing your policy, you need to devulge more details about the situation motivating your questions. Depending upon whether you are:
Assuming this is a home environment, one solution would be to lock the connection to the Internet in a closet & state that the Internet will be available during certain enforceable hours, & hold to the enforcement. Any infraction may result is canceling access altogether. If this is a work environment, intrusion detection systems (IDS) such as Snort can monitor who is doing what, but you will need someone knowledgeable on staff who will do the continual care & feeding of the monitoring system(s). Paraphrasing BSDfan666's intent, perhaps you need to look at the larger issue of parental control assuming this is either a home or small office issue. Googling "parental internet control" may be more in line with your fundamental concerns. Maybe a $100 consumer router can help in providing a solution to the problem, & maybe it can't. Since Internet Download Manager is a Windows application, you may want to look into the parental controls available in Vista or Windows 7. Look for information on Microsoft's site & search for forum sites discussing access control. While most people at this site are glad to present their opinions, this site is more oriented to general Unix issues & BSD specifics. Having intimate knowledge of Windows' features for parental control is not a common topic here. Again, if you can & will provide more context, you may get better answers. |
