For clarity, after the -release is finalized:
- The Project will build the kernels, filesets, and packages for all architectures.
- The Project will revise the FAQ and other Project web pages for the new release.
Among the updated web pages mentioned above, there will be a new Upgrade Guide for transitioning from 6.7-release to 6.8-release, making note of any manual steps that might be needed before or after the upgrade.
Usually, your previously installed packages will continue to work after an upgrade, as no libraries are removed. They are usually updated after the upgrade, using pkg_add(1).
After the 6.8-release announcement, you should:
- Review the new Upgrade Guide.
- Perform any recommended pre-upgrade steps.
- Upgrade, either automatically or manually*
- Perform any recommended post-upgrade steps.
- Update your installed packages, with
# pkg_add -u

* If your architecture supports sysupgrade(8), you can use it to upgrade automatically. If not, or, if you wish to upgrade manually, download your architecture's bsd.rd RAMDISK kernel for 6.8-release, move it into your root directory, reboot(8), select the new RAMDISK kernel, then select the upgrade script.
