Default ral wireless card slow when acting as hostap

Hi all

I have a server with a ralink rt2651 as wireless network device and I have configured the system to be running in access point mode (hostap) with wpa2 security.
Basically it works, but when I want to stream audio from a connected laptop to a connected apple airport express, the sound 'stutters' due to what I think are network throughput issues.

The same thing with a regular wireless router works with the sound never stuttering.

Has anyone an idea what is causing the problem?

Does the netstat -in output show errors or collisions?

Code:
# netstat -in
Name Mtu Network Address Ipkts Ierrs Opkts Oerrs Coll
ral0 2290 <Link#1> 00:0c:f6:xx:xx:xx 989916 0 979643 2145 0

The Oerrs for this network device increase really slowly (+/- 2 on a 76MB upload from my laptop to the server). While streaming, they Oerrs increase at a higher rate (+/- 1 per 2 seconds)

So the ouput errors increase, while streaming.

I am a quite old-fashioned guy, who still uses CD players and UTP cabling for networking, and I have no idea which TCP/IP protocol you use for streaming.
You can see protocol statistics, including errors, with netstat -s or netstat -ss. See netstat(1).

You could try to give a higher priority (negative number) to the streaming process by using renice(8). Use top to see the resource usage. You also can use top to alter the scheduling priorities.

The streaming uses the RAOP protocol, which is based on RTP (Real-time Transport Protocol) which uses UDP.
