cwm: how do I get the menu-exec-wm function to work?

cwm: how do I get the menu-exec-wm function to work?

When I start cwm with no ~/.cwmrc just using the defaults I can bring up the "exec WindowManager" menu with Ctrl+Alt+w. I then see the small popup with the prompt between the two double brackets:

The problem is, nothing happens when I enter any commands like fvwm for example. Is there some special magic to it? Am I overlooking sth.?
