I wouldn't bother buying a new Nvidia card for amd64 FreeBSD... Nvidia doesn't have 64 bit drivers for FreeBSD and you'lll be stuck using the xorg nv driver just like you are now. You will gain zero benefit because you won't be making use of hardware acceleration anyways. A new card will not perform any better than your current onboard Nvidia adapter for the functionality you will have.

I didn't realize this until after I already had the amd64 FreeBSD7 all set up and tweaked. I went to get Nvidia drivers in preparation to play Sauerbraten and... disappointment. People have been asking for them since 2005 and still no joy so I'm not holding my breath. Oh well, I love this setup I have now and I'm not going back to 32 bit just to be able to play a few games.

It sickens me, but I have a Windows Vista install that I use for games. I've also got a very nice x86_64 Linux (from scratch) setup on here.

--------------------------------------------------------
Now, here's what I'm running FreeBSD on:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 CPU

Board is Intel 965P chipset based from Gigabyte

4 Gb DDR2 RAM

9 Gb UFS partition for / (the rest of my storage is Linux ext3 that I can use, and NTFS that would be read-only if I cared). I have two 250 Gb drives in this rig.

Video card is Nvidia 8800GTS 640 Mb. As I said, useless for anything but ordinary desktop stuff because there's no nvidia driver for FreeBSD AMD64

Monitor is a Viewsonic 19" LCD

NIC is a plain jane D-Link realtek 8139 based card...the rl driver in kernel. (stupid onboard Yukon2 disabled... I hate it)

Audio is onboard Intel High Definition audio, and it's absolutely superb in FreeBSD. I love the OSS drivers. Linux ALSA blows chunks.

OS is FreeBSD 7.0 release, with upgraded ports tree.

FreeBSD cramit 7.0-RELEASE FreeBSD 7.0-RELEASE #0: Thu May 1 00:55:45 EDT 2008 root@cramit:/usr/src/sys/amd64/compile/GROGAN amd64

Hydrapolic, If your machine runs freebsd fine as is then why waste the time and money required to either purchase parts to build a custom machine or purchase a scratch and dent server from Dell or IBM (Big Blue). In other words if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Default too many to mention

I have BSD installed on a good number of machines, servers and desktops. The one I am currently working on is my home gaming rig (yeah, I'm dual booting WinXP with BSD)

AMD X2 4000 (soon to be Phenom)
2GB OCZ DDR2
36GB 10K Maxtor Atlas U160 SCSI
200GB Seagate SATA 7200.8
ATI Radeon 3850 PCIe

course, it's currently all for naught since it freezes solid when you launch X...

correction: it now runs beautifully - thanks to whoever fixed the radeonHD driver

My LAN consists of five machines, one windows box (family), one game/test machine (XP, Linux, FreeBSD) serving as my desktop, a junked desktop in dire need of some RAM so I can put it to use, a desktop turned server running OpenBSD, and of course

My darling Dixie, a gateway laptop with a Sempron 3300+ (2.0Ghz), 512MB DDR, 80GB hard drive, ATI Radeon X-press 200/300M (depending on whether you trust retailer or the vendor), and omni-function enough CD/DVD burner running PC-BSD and functioning as my primary computer ;-).

Every thing works fine except the onboard modem and wireless (I use a Netgear WG511T card instead).

Code:
Terry@dixie$ uname -a 3:52
FreeBSD dixie.launchmodem.com 6.3-RELEASE-p1 FreeBSD 6.3-RELEASE-p1 #6: Fri Apr 11 13:03:49 EDT 2008 root@pcbsd:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/PCBSD i386

I find PC-BSD useful, since I don't rely on the FreeBSD install cd's for more then the base system and installing KDE or Gnome != quick through ports or packages. Which is probably why most times I setup FreeBSD desktops running X, I usually use blackbox or wmaker hehe.

Into the cutting-edge stuff, eh Carpetsmoker? I've used the 3Com card you have as well, but it is the only one I have ever had that failed physically. The connector broke off.

My three main FreeBSD boxes are not quite as old, but are far from new: a dual Athlon and two dual Xeons (Prestonias), each with 3GB memory and SCSI drives. One is my desktop, one is a dual-boot development station, and one is a server that runs internal web pages, a couple of moderately-sized databases, and the other usual stuff (IMAP, DNS, print serving).

My home fileserver is currently an ancient Dell:
  • Pentium-II 333 MHz
  • 384 MB PC133 RAM
  • 10 GB HD for /
  • 2x120 GB HD for /home in gmirror RAID1
  • 3Com 3C905C NIC

When I get time (possibly today since I'm home sick with strep and the flu), I'm going to move the drives over to:
  • MSI Master K7D motherboard
  • 2x AthlonMP CPUs
  • 3 GB SDRAM
  • 2x 160 GB IDE drives
  • 2x 120 GB IDE drives
  • either configured as RAID5 using graid5 or as raidz using ZFS
