Default MySQL founder savages Oracle’s move to 'open core'

From http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/09...le_over_mysql/

Quote:
One of the key founders of the MySQL project, Ulf Michael ‘Monty’ Widenius, has savaged Oracle’s decision to start selling commercially exclusive extensions to MySQL.

In an extensive blog post, Monty said that the so-called "open core" model – where open source code is sold alongside proprietary add-ons – was not the original intention of MySQL and that the setup devalues the open source project. The full open source nature of the project was what made MySQL so popular, he explains, and Sun’s earlier attempts to move to an open core model were squashed.

So people will fork MySQL and Oracle will end up maintaining two commercial data base product and still have the same market share as before Sun acquisition. People who now run MySQL, PostgreSQL or LightSQL are not going to switch to Oracle. I have hunch that people who run Oracle will also refuse to switch to commercial version of MySQL. That seem like a dumb business decision to me.

The most valuable software product that Oracle got from Sun acquisition was Solars which they manage to kill fairly quickly. I see the same is going to happen to MySQL. So they gave 8 billion dollars for what? Java...
