Question Xorg-7.4_2 build error

Please be patient and gentle, I'm still learning. I am a person with an autism spectrum disorder so I may communicate differently and interpret things in other ways than you might expect me to. Still, I have a brain that seems to work, though :-)

I read this instruction:

1. Put your attachment up on any website, copy-and-paste into http://freebsd-gnome.pastebin.com, or use send-pr(1) with the attachment.

2. Try to avoid sending any attachments to the mailing list (gnome@FreeBSD.org), because attachments sent to FreeBSD mailing lists are usually discarded by the mailing list software.

3. Also, it might be a good idea to provide an overview of all packages installed on your system (i.e. an `ls /var/db/pkg`). --> see this post.

So here I go:

Xorg-7.4_2, failed make command output:

Quote:
checking for headers required to compile python extensions... not found
configure: error: Python headers not found
===> Script "configure" failed unexpectedly.

Please run the gnomelogalyzer, available from
"http://www.freebsd.org/gnome/gnomelogalyzer.sh", which will diagnose the problem and suggest a solution. --> did this.

If - and only if - the gnomelogalyzer cannot solve the problem, report the build failure to the FreeBSD GNOME team at gnome@FreeBSD.org, and attach:

(a) "/usr/ports/devel/gobject-introspection/work/gobject-introspection-0.6.7/config.log" --> see attachment.
(b) the output of the failed make command --> see this post.
(c) the gnomelogalyzer output. --> see this post.

Gnomelogalyzer output:

I performed all steps as instructed by the gnomelogalyzer sh script.

Code:
# pwd
# /usr/ports/x11/xorg
# sh gnomelogalyzer.sh
Quote:
Generating build log. Please wait... done.

The cause of your build failure is not known to gnomelogalyzer.sh. Before
e-mailing the build log to the FreeBSD GNOME team at freebsd-gnome@FreeBSD.org,

I TRIED EACH OF THE FOLLOWING:

* If you are generating your own logfile, make sure to generate it with
something similar to:
"make |& tee /path/to/logfile" (csh/tcsh) --> no log is created
* Make sure your cvsup(1) configuration file specifies the 'ports-all'
collection
* Run cvsup(1) and attempt the build again
* Check /usr/ports/UPDATING for information pertinent to your build
failure
* 99% of the commonly reported build failures can be solved by
running "portupgrade -a"
* Read the FAQs at http://www.FreeBSD.org/gnome/
* Search the archives of freebsd-gnome@FreeBSD.org. Archives can be
searched at http://www.freebsd.org/gnome/index.html#search

If you have not performed each of the above suggestions, don't bother asking for help. The chances are good that you'll simply be told to perform one of the aforementioned steps.
Log output

Code:
# pwd
# /usr/ports/x11/xorg
# make |& tee /path/to/logfile" (csh/tcsh)
--> no log is created though!

I am afraid there are not many people here that can help you with this.

Most people, just like me, who have run into these problems before, just give up on compiling X from source and simply use the pre-compiled X packages.

But if you enjoy this compiling from source thing, feel free to continue with it, but please don't be disappointed if nobody can help you with this

When I have to compile a port, I log the whole make session with script(1)
Code:
# script /home/j65nko/mailman-port.log
Script started, output file is /home/j65nko/mailman-port.log
# make
All output, and all things you type will now be recorded by script in the mailman-port.log file.
To stop this recording or logging just type exit
Code:
# exit
Script done, output file is /home/j65nko/mailman-port.log
You can choose a filename of your liking, script(1) does not care.

You can easily read the log with
Code:
$ less mailman-port.log
If you want to get rid of the recorded typo's and backspaces use
Code:
$ col -b <mailman-port.log >mailman-port.log.clean

Aha. This is very different form Gentoo Linux where one compiles stuff all the time. It means that FreeBSD is not suitbable for me then.

This is FreeBSD. You have the choice: packages or ports. Freebsd-update or make world. But you must be ready to dig yourself out of a hole. X and everything around it should build just fine if your other ports, and the ports tree, are up to date. I rebuilt X and about 150 related ports about a month ago in a 32-bit -> 64-bit switchover. Took me the best part of a day, but everything works, as it has always done. If you managed to survive Gentoo, you should be able to survive FreeBSD. Because it does have structure.

You can do it step by step

Just like you did with your custom kernel compilation. With some suggestions from here, you finally managed to get that custom kernel working isn't it?
Don't give up

Code:
cd /usr/ports/devel/gobject-introspection
/bin/rm -rf work
make checksum
portmaster -d devel/gobject-introspection
Have you tried something like that?
If that works, you can continue with
polkit, consolekit, hal, etc...
