Default PGP 5/6 on amd64?

I'm trying to install /usr/ports/security/pgp6 on a new 8.1-RELEASE AMD64 system, but unfortunately it's got the ONLY_FOR_ARCHS= i386 installed. I have a number of users on this server who need their public keys imported and usable on this server, is there a solution to getting this installed?

What people call pgp5/pgp6 seem to come from http://www.pgpi.org/, they're largely unmaintained and quite abandoned, or should be abandoned rather.

If the FreeBSD port is marked for i386 only, it's possible that they simply won't compile on amd64.. maybe it's not 64-bit safe?

Most people use the GNU projects GnuPG, which is OpenPGP compliant.. but indeed many do use one of the other commercial/unmaintained products instead.

Perhaps it might be possible to use GnuPG, or if FreeBSD supports it, run the i386 executables on your AMD64 server.. if all else fails, try compiling the available source code yourself.

Yeah, I tried building from source, that failed with a bunch of calls the compiler didn't know what to do with. I'm going to guess the binary isn't going to play nicely with the kernel.

Hopefully GnuPG will pan out and import the user's keys correctly without too much difficulty, I just think it odd that something as widely-used as pgp would be limited to the older versions on the 64-bit architecture.

Well, if vanilla source compatibility is out.. and you're unable to make the the necessary fixes, 32-bit binary compatibility made indeed be a possibility on FreeBSD.

Someone else here might be able to confirm if it's possible, and what's required, but indeed attempting to import the keys using GnuPG would be the best solution.

Also note that this port has been marked as vulnerable since 2005:

I would say that migrating to gpg will be easier than fixing this

Oooooooooooo.

Yeah it is a handful of our old old users that use this so we usually forget it's there. Thanks for the heads-up on that one.
