Default Some images are black in Firefox

FreeBSD 7.0 Release, Firefox 3.0.3.

On some images, instead of the image I see only a black rectangle. It seems to be (mostly) on images that are resized. I can right-click and choose View Image and the picture will show, but going back to the full page still shows the black block.

Is there a settings change anyone knows of to fix this?

Edit: Additionally, on other pages, the Firefox toolbars are duplicated over and over in the main browser page. This all seems like a video driver problem, but it is limited to Firefox.

I had that too, but it vanished somewhere in 7.0-STABLE or 7.1-PRERELEASE.

Thanks. I'll try the pre-release and report back.

Well, I finally got around to updating to 7.1-PRERELEASE but the problem is still there.

Any other ideas for what to try?

You can try updating firefox, fi you haven't already.
If that doesn't help, try removing firefox extensions and/or configuration (~/.mozilla/firefox), maybe there's an error there somehow?

If that doesn't work, you can always dig in the 263MB of bloatcode to try and fix the bug.

At some point after upgrading to firefox 3, I was having similar symptoms. Certain images would be half blacked-out. Other pages would render very strangely (and in some cases were totally unreadable). This was happening on both my FBSD laptop and CentOS workstations.

Anyway, I backed up my bookmarks and removed ~/.mozilla, as mentioned. I have not seen a repeat of the problem yet.

Yes, for me, the problem existed with scaled-down/resized pictures only.

Deleting .mozilla had no effect. Other ideas welcome.

This could be that Xorg bug that Firefox 3 exposes on some systems... do you use a depth of 24?

Try adding Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps" "true" to your Device section.. or change the depth to 16.

That seems to have fixed it on the sites I've gone back to.

Thanks.

No problem..

Newer versions of Xorg should have this as default now, or so I read.. using AccelMethod EXA instead of XAA if possible will also fix the problem.

But I'm glad it worked for you, it worked for me as well..

Thumbs down This is a Firefox bug and I see it on Windows

There's a huge thread on this bug at bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox-3.0/+bug/182038 , but as of Firefox 3.5.6, I still see this behavior on Windows XP SP3.

Images become black more often as the number of tabs increases. Special culprits are Wikipedia and OKCupid. Rebooting the machine fixes the problem, so this smells like a memory leak in the already bloated Firefox.
