Cool There is some troble in my netbsd's audio

I installed NetBSD 5.0.1/AMD64, but when I play mp3 files there is no sound.
I have seached the internet , but no useful information found...
Please help me, and tell me how to use or set for audio/sound.

Thanks a lot!

Hi,

it is only when you play mp3 or don't you have sound at all? Do you use gnome? Can you play anything from console?

You can also try adjusting the mixerctl variables (i.e. mute some chanel etc). I think there is a problem.

On current you can use hdaudio driver for the chipsets of Intel (so instead of azalia driver).

The following message would appear to be the culprit, Intel's HD audio really is a nightmare.
azalia0: codec[1] has no audio function groups

Is there any way you can test a later version of NetBSD? if still doesn't work, then considering submitting a bug report.

The message about no audio function groups doesn't disturb the audio system- this is normal- on my T61 I have the same and sound works- including the Pulseaudio etc.

The thing that might be distorting the sound is the mixer settings- I am sure that smething should be muted. But this may be checked only by the owner of that laptop. Normally T61 doesn't offer a sound unless I change some mixetctl variables.

Piotr.

I don't have any sound at all.

> Do you use gnome?
Yes, I am using Gnome now.

> Can you play anything from console?
No, I can not.
I searched an audio file (audiotest.au ) ,
larkhost$ cat ./audiotest.au > /dev/audio
sh: cannot create /dev/audio: error 16
larkhost$ cat ./audiotest.au > /dev/audio1
^C
larkhost$
but has no sound.

Ok, if you use Gnome you probably use pulseaudio. Try not to load Gnome and X at all including gdm, hal and dbus- then try to play something from console (you can use mplayer).

Please also try to play it from the root account- maybe there is a problem with permissions.

If it doesn't work I do not know how to help you. Maybe mixer mutes something. It maight be also problem within gstreamer.

I would advise to run the current and see if the hdaudio driver supports your card well.

Another way, how to see if the hdaudio driver supports my card?
I do not know how to use it?
Can you tell me?

Thanks!

I did so. There is still no sound when I played audio files. And with some errors listed blow:
I: caps.c: Dropping root privileges.
W: main.c: High-priority scheduling enabled in configuration but not allowed by policy.
E: pid.c: Daemon already running.
E: main.c: pa_pid_file_create() failed.

Yakebao,

from the errors
Quote:
I: caps.c: Dropping root privileges.
W: main.c: High-priority scheduling enabled in configuration but not allowed by policy.
E: pid.c: Daemon already running.
E: main.c: pa_pid_file_create() failed.
I see you still use pulseadio. What I asked you to do is to hash in rc.conf:

dbus="YES"
hal="YES"
gdm="YES"

and restart the system and then try to play some file (use some console mp3 player).

I am pretty sure that there is something with the setup (perhaps gstreamer). Could you try to run gstreamer-properties and set everything to pulseadio after you try to play the sound from pure console?

I really cannot imagine that azalia doesn't support your hardware.

Hdaudio drive is available as far as I know in current only- you had to download the sets for current and build you own kernel only with hdaudio removing azalia.

Please hash dbus, hal and gdm, restart the system and then play a sound. BTW, do you use headphones set when playing?

Piotr

P.S.

how did you installed gnome? Maybe some component is missing?

To Pjoter,

I'am very glad to tell you that, this problem has benn solved now.
Yesterday , I had get all the packages(2009Q3) from ftp.netbsd.org, then reinstalled my system(NetBSD/amd64 version).
NOTE:At selecting packages page , I choosed FULL install.

After reboot my NetBSD system,
1) I installed gnome from the packages:
#pkg_add gnome
(dependence is solved by pkgsrc system)
(dbus/hal/famd/gdm is copied to /etc/rc.d/ and configed at /etc/rc.conf)

2) I installed all the gstreamer-plugins*
As you said, I run gstreamer-properties and set everything to pulseadio.

3) Copy pulse config files to /etc
# cp -R /usr/pkg/etc/pulse/ /etc/

4) Modify the default config file
#load-module module-hal-detect
==>
load-module module-hal-detect tsched=0
NOTE:I searched this by Google.

5) Add user to pulse groups
#usermod -G pulse userLoginName
#usermod -G pulseacc userLoginName
#usermod -G pulsert userLoginName

6) Reboot the system. When startup , I played mp3 file with Totem Movie Player 2.26.3. Every thing is ok.

I am very very very grateful for your help!

Best wished!

I'm having a similar problem. I have audio working (can cat > /dev/audio, and it makes noise), but cannot access pulseaudio. I followed the directions above, and pulseaudio is starting, but does not work.

To test it, I use the gstreamer-properties program, and click "test". I get "Autodetect: failed to connect: connection refused". Furthermore, if I use the drop-down in gstreamer-properties to select the pulseaudio output instead of autodetect, it prints "dropping root privileges" on the console, and the program hangs.

I've tried adding "auth-anonymous=1" to "module-native-protocol-unix" in default.pa, but that doesn't seem to help. Furthermore, there doesn't seems to be anything relevant in /var/log/messages, the only things I see from pulse are "high priority scheduling enabled in configuration but not allowed in policy".

Any advice or tips for where to looks would be great. Thanks!
