Default Stop Adobe Flash Petition

Sign it here:
http://www.petitiononline.com/0034655a/petition.html

Quote:
The number of Adobe Flash sites are growing, and an increasing amount
of sites will simply cease to function when Flash is disabled or
unavailable.

I would like to call to all web developers to (re)consider their use
of Flash, while it does have place on the web, it is often used in the
wrong way, on the wrong place, in a badly implemented manner.

Why I dislike flash:

o It often adds little or nothing to a website, most things can often
be achieved with either CSS or Javascript (or a combination) which
suffer from much less problems.

o Flash is not usable, for example it often breaks the back button,
"find in page" does not work, setting font size does not work, and
many more.

o Browser settings such as font size, enabling/disabled sound in web
pages etc. do not apply to flash, leaving the page's designer, not the
user, in control of the browser.

o Flash is not accessible, screen readers, braille displays etc. often
have serious difficulty accessing flash pages.

o Progressive enhancement is difficult to achieve with flash, unlike
for example CSS or Javascript, flash is binary data which interacts
poorly with HTML.

o Flash is not supported on all operating systems, and only on a very
limited set of architectures.

o Flash is slow, if you do not have a new $1000 PC but a somewhat older
"office PC" flash can be a serious performance hit.

o There are a number of security issues with flash, and Adobe has
never seemed to quick/concerned to fix them.

o Animation is annoying, I want to access information, not watch a
"cool" animation.

Sincerely,
The Undersigned

I signed this one, but I also signed the petition to update Flash on FreeBSD (a few years ago). While I'd like to see flash go away, until it does it'd be cool (for some people) to have the latest Flash on FreeBSD.

Now this is one I would sign!

Flash is complete and utter filth.. polluting the Internet, dang-it I want to enter a Coca-Cola contest once in my life without seeing a "Woah dude, Go here to upgrade your flash! blah blah" message.

So far only 8 signatures though. I don't think that will scare Adobe or web designers too badly.

However, it's a start. (I signed it.)

Of course it won't cause a paradigm shift, but it can be used to show that many people/users are not at all impressed but annoyed with "sleak" flash sites, which might just be enough to convince a few people/sites.

Q.F.T.

When I surf the web, I'm looking for content. If it looks sexy when I get there, that's nice but I'd rather find something _worthwhile_ while I'm at it.

I've seen some very, very attractively designed websites in flash, some that are even quite easy to use (if you have the right software) but simply put: If the product ya selling ain't worth [self censored] or the content is trivial, why do I want to spend an hour looking at your eye popping website when I can just turn a page in the manual or buy a better product?

WELL PUT.

Signed.

the web designer in this tail must be really dumb or really drunk to not reach enlightenment quickly after so many exchanges...

Wait, I've probably encountered dozens of websites by such dipsticks, wonder if they ever learn without a few <KICK>s in the butt</KICK>

Another thing that needs to be fumigated, cremated and buried at sea.

[bad]ActiveX[/bad]

I tech support an internet café, running (I am very much afraid) XP machines. We have constant complaints about random photo upload activex controls not showing. The only way to install these is to log in as admin, log in to the site (even if you prefer abominations like facebook didn't exist), go to the photo upload page, and allow the activex to install. On every machine. For every service you can't avoid not supporting. Often for each language. Until they create a new version of the rotten thing.

Realistically, You just can't do it.

Facebook even has the applet correctly reimplemented as a java applet for Firefox - But they don't use it for IE, so we still have complaints.

Bah. IE is teh loozors.

I'm shocked myself and signed it. I hate flash with a passion. My old site I used to go to didn't have flash to listen to music now it is required so I don't go there anymore.
