Default Desperate help needed for KDE

Hi everyone
After booting into FreeBSD, I have encountered the following error when I start kde:
Code:
Could not read network connection list.
/home/disappearedng/.DCOPserver_.lan__0

Please check that the "dcopserver program is running
I have looked up google and have done the following
1) login as root, and startkde (still same error)
2) renamed ~/.kde to ~/.kde.bak so that when kde starts it builds a new config (still the same error)
3) chmod -R 777 ~/.kde
3) went to /tmp and deleted everything that has to do with my username and and anything that has to do with .ICE

However, after doing all that, I am still stuck with the same problem.

So I am convinced that I want to upgrade to a newer version of kde(i am running 3.5). and I want to preserve all the programs that I have installed on my system. How do I do that? Do i have to reinstall everything again?

In addition, Is there a "repair" function that I could do to repair my kde right now??
Thx
