Default Video card instead of sound card

Hi,

My problem is : i have no sound in openbsd 5.2
I think i find the problem but i am not sure : my system is using my video card instead of my sound card , here is what i get :

$ dmesg | grep -i audio
azalia0 at pci2 dev 0 function 1 "ATI Radeon HD 3600 HD Audio" rev 0x00: apic 3 int 1

At least i am connected to my video card on motherboard (realtek).

Any helps is welcome, thank you.

The dmesg output of my computer says:
Code:
auvia0 at pci0 dev 17 function 5 "VIA VT8233 AC97" rev 0x60: apic 2 int 22
ac97: codec id 0x414c4760 (Avance Logic ALC655 rev 0)
audio0 at auvia0
That is why audioctl(1) gives the following output:
Code:
$ audioctl | head -10
name=VIA VT8233
version=
config=auvia
encodings=ulinear:8:1:1,mulaw:8:1:1*,alaw:8:1:1*,slinear:8:1:1*,
slinear_le:16:2:1,ulinear_le:16:2:1*,slinear_be:16:2:1*,ulinear_be:16:2:1*
properties=full_duplex,mmap,independent
full_duplex=0
fullduplex=0
blocksize=9600
hiwat=6
lowat=4
The azalia(4) has the following in the BUGS section:

Code:
BUGS
     This driver does not support codecs that are intended for HDMI or
     DisplayPort connectivity.
I am not really a sound expert on OpenBSD, but this could explain why you don't have that audio0 at auvia0 line in your dmesg output.

Code:
azalia0 at pci2 dev 0 function 1 "ATI Radeon HD 3600 HD Audio" rev 0x00: apic 3 int 1
azalia0: no supported codecs
This is the problem

From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codec:
Quote:
A codec is a device or computer program capable of encoding or decoding a digital data stream or signal.[1][2][3] The word codec is a portmanteau of "coder-decoder" or, less commonly, "compressor-decompressor".

[snip]

An audio codec converts analog audio signals into digital signals for transmission or storage. A receiving device then converts the digital signals back to analog using an audio decompressor, for playback. An example of this is the codecs used in the sound cards of personal computers.
I have to go to work now, so I don't have the time now to see whether there are recent changes in the azalia source code that hint at codecs support for your ATI Radeon HD 3600 HD Audio device. Maybe jggimi or ocicat have the time

It's not the problem. The OP specifically said he doesn't want to use audio from the video card. He wants to use his actual sound card. Unfortunately, the output of 'dmesg' clearly shows that no sound card is being detected.

ripe, what's the output of 'pcidump'?

Yes it is that, i want to use my sound card (chip of my mortherboard) and not my video card as sound card, sorry for not being so clear !

Your board is MICRO-STAR INTERNATIONAL CO., LTD MS-7253. A quick google shows that you can find the manual at http://www.msi.com/product/mb/K9VGM-V.html

The manual is not very detailed, but says it has onboard VGA and Audio:
Code:
On-Board Peripherals
l    External:
  -   1 x PS/2 mouse connector
  -   1 x PS/2 keyboard connector
  -   1 x Parallel port
  -   1 x COM port
  -   1 x VGA port
  -   4 x USB connectors
  -   1 x RJ-45 connector
  -   1 x Audio jack

   Internal:
  -   1 x Intel/MSI standard Front Panel Pinheader
  -   2 x Front USB pinheader (4 ports)
  -   1 x COM pinheader
  -   1 x CPU Fan connector
  -   1 x System Fan connector
  -   1 x Power Fan connector (Optional)
  -   1 x Clear CMOS connector
  -   1 x Chassis Intrusion Switch connector
               ®
  -   1 x Intel Front Audio pinheader
  -   2 x IDE(ATA133) connectors
  -   1 x Floppy connector
  -   1 x CD-in connector
  -   2 x SATA connectors

Audio
     8-channel audio codec Realtek ALC883.
  -     Compliance with AC97 v2.3 Spec.
  - Meet PC2001 audio performance requirement.
http://www.msi.com/product/mb/K9VGM-V.html#/?div=Detail mentions:
Code:
Audio

• Chipset integrated by Realtek® ALC883
- Flexible 8-channel audio with jack sensing
- Compliant with Azalia 1.0 Spec
The VIA specs for the VIA K8M890 chipset (North Bridge) are here http://www.via.com.tw/en/products/ch...series/k8m890/
According to that page the corresponding South Bridge is VIA VT8251 that has
the following audio:
Code:
VIA Vinyl™ HD Audio (AC'97 integrated)
VIA Vinyl™ Gold HD Audio (PCI companion controller)
For some reason MSI uses another VIA South Bridge, the VT8237A. http://www.via.com.tw/en/products/ch...237a/specs.jsp

But this chip also mentions the VIA Vinyl audio, and the Realtek ALC883 is not mentioned at all. So I don't know what MSI did with the audio.

At http://www.viaarena.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29131 a Linux user also has problems with audio. According to this post http://www.viaarena.com/forums/showt...131#post190298
Code:
 Default Sound with chipset K8M890 (pci device not found!)
Dear runa,

We checked the kernel source 2.6.18.
It said that those chips(VT8237A and ALC883) would be supported.
We had no such set of combined chips to test.
You can try it.

Regards,
Venus
So it looks like this Linux user also has a similar (MSI ?) board with a similar problem

I just checked the motherboard layout on the first page of the manual. It shows an Realtek ALC883 chip next to the PCI slots. So MSI decided not to use the VIA sound stuff at all, but preferred this Realtek chip.

Can you get sound with a Ubuntu Live CD?

According to http://www.openbsd.org/plus42.html support for Realtek ALC883 was added in OpenBSD 4.2 .

So it looks like Linux has to consult the BIOS in order to recognize that particular ALC883 chip.
BTW the Wikipedia entry for Intel High Definition Audio reveals:
Quote:
Intel High Definition Audio (also called HD Audio or Azalia) refers to the specification released by Intel in 2004[1] for delivering high-definition audio that is capable of playing back more channels at higher quality than previous integrated audio codecs like AC'97. During development it had the codename Azalia.
So that is the origin of the azalia name.

If you only installed 5.2 recently and thus is it not much a hassle to backup your stuff, you could try the latest snapshot ftp://ftp.openbsd.org/pub/OpenBSD/snapshots/i386/
This snapshot is very, very close to what will be OpenBSD 5.3 which will be released on May 1st 2013.

If this snapshot also does not give you sound, you could ask on the OpenBSD misc mailing list, but be aware that the developers are very busy right now with the 5.3 release, so don't be disappointed if they do not have the time to answer or assist you in this matter right now.

I am using 5.3 which i downloaded and installed yesterday and sound work !

Code:
$ dmesg | grep -i audio
azalia0 at pci2 dev 0 function 1 "ATI Radeon HD 3600 HD Audio" rev 0x00: apic 3 int 1
azalia1 at pci5 dev 1 function 0 "VIA HD Audio" rev 0x10: apic 2 int 17
audio0 at azalia1

Code:
$ audioctl | head -10
name=HD-Audio
version=1.0
config=azalia1
encodings=slinear_le:16:2:1,slinear_le:20:4:1,slinear_le:24:4:1
properties=full_duplex,independent
full_duplex=0
fullduplex=0
blocksize=3840
hiwat=9
lowat=1
Maybe it is the email i send to OpenBSD or not, but i am happy with sound now

Ty again J65nko and adamk !
