Default OpenBSD Switched Cluster Member without reason

Hello everyone,

currently I am working with an old OpenBSD Cluster (OpenBSD 4.9 (GENERIC.MP)). Unfortunately the cluster switched the state and I don't find any hint why I did.

I checked every interface on the (new) backup member, which seems to be fine:

Code:

I don't know why the cluster switched states and I do not have so much knowledge how to find out, what is the problem and why it is not switching back.

The first member (now backup) has advskew 10 configured, the second one 100 (now master)
Code:
> cat hostname.carp1
inet x.x.x.x 255.255.255.0 x.x.x.255 vhid 58 pass 254546a4c87636a9fa51f36162fc2fcd advbase 1 advskew 10
Thanks for your help.

Hello and welcome.

Unfortunately, from the information presented here I cannot tell you why your systems transitioned from the MASTER to the BACKUP system, nor from the fragment of ifstated rules why the state indicates down.

Setting the sysctl net.inet.carp.log to increase logging may be helpful. See the carp(4) man page.

You might consider upgrading -- though after 12 releases, reinstalling would be easier. I recommend it since 4.9 has been unsupported since May 2012, and there have been 124 patches to sys/netinet/ip_carp.c in the 12 releases between 4.9 and 6.1. You could look through the list of committed patches here:

Hey jggimi,

thanks for your advise. Unfortunately it is not possible to set up new hardware quickly.

I restarted the cluster node and noticed it was master for a short time and switched to backup again:

This is a newly reported symptom for an infrastructure that has been static for six years. While I suspect the root cause is hardware or network, I do not know this for certain.

You might be able to manually override the problem with carpdemote - see INTERFACE GROUPS in ifconfig(8). But attempting to use it to force the cluster to use the intended MASTER system may cause new problems.

----

This is a small forum, with very few CARP users, and I have been unable to determine the cause or the solution.

You might consider posting a problem report to the OpenBSD misc@ mailing list, which is a much larger community, and includes about half of the active developers. Someone may see something in your problem report that I do not.

If you post there, you'll need to be aware that you are running an unsupported version, and "upgrade" will likely be the most common response you receive from that community.
