(SOLVED)FreeBSD+CUPS+Samba
Howdy ya'll,
Im looking for some valid documentation on setting up samba and cups properly. Ive googled as much as I can and found nothing that is very accurate, up to date, or related to what I need. I just want to learn how to either have my FreeBSD system control the jobs or just have the server just 'hold' the printers and load the native MS drivers. Any valid docs would be greatly appreciated, if i need to add anything else ill do so. I have 12 printers and 70+ users to manage. Our current server is a Suse 9.3 box that is horid, it tries to control the network randomly no matter what I set it to. Also it doesnt manage the printers well at all. Thank you ahead of time. For my needs using any *nix is gonna be a pain in my messed up network. Just gonna use MS 2k3 somewhere. But ill continue to use fbsd for other items. When doing this through CUPS and Samba, it's an issue of their documentation I believe ;-). FreeBSD ships with LPD/LPR for printing (nice if old system imho). I'm fairly familiar with Samba for file sharing but printing, I've generally avoided under any operating system, so I can't be of much help with CUPS via Samba. What do you mean, by "control the network" ?

scottro's site is as good as any (scroll to find what you need):
http://home.nyc.rr.com/computertaijutsu/ You do know that CUPS stands for "Can't Usually Print Stuff", right? I use it, but it is about my least favorite application. |

Hello,
You have to read and try http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=110931 http://www.us-webmasters.com/FreeBSD/Install/Samba/ http://www.aboutdebian.com/lan.htm http://www.linuxprinting.org/kpfeifl...-draft.html#37 http://ca.samba.org/samba/ http://www.physik.uni-wuerzburg.de/~vrbehr/cups-pdf/ http://www.linuxprinting.org/kpfeifl...-draft.html#37 to get some ppds: http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/OpenPrinting You can use cups to print and samba to file sharing or you can mix the two togother. I used to have them live alone, to add a printer (with this confiruation) in M$ workstation see attachment cups run great in my office where we run Novell with M$ workstation + hp printers. My (ghost) FBSD station serve as a getway to the printer for my others (ghost) FBSD stations do not forgot that Apple buy Cups for Mac OSX so cups will be better in near future |

Samba is very configurable, in my case the windows machines were telling the Samba server to go screw itself when debating who was the master browser or domain controller or some thing like that (*mutters about Microsoft networking*). Finding an option in Samba's documentation I was able to adjust the configuration file to use a much higher value then the default used in such arguments. Essentially making the Samba server shout back "You are obsolete" and take control of the situation. ( <-- does not enjoy microsoft windows nt)
