Default system resources

while I'm here today I have some general questions about how openbsd handles system resources.
I ask this because when I play a cd with cdio the music often halts for a moment (I guess while reading the disk), is this because my cd drive is not fast enough? (I have openbsd 4.3 on a macmini ppc g4 1.25mgz with 1g of ram).
Also, mplayer complains about my system being to slow for playing dvds and if I play a movie file it sometimes slows down.
I remember also postgres complaining about not having enough resources, but I think that was when I only had 256m of ram.
I recently increased the number of processes allowed per user, and it goes a bit better.

In a word, what else can I do to avoid these problems? Or is it just that I have a slow machine?
