I won't bore you with the numerous permations of attempting to mount this usb drive .BUT.

They usually result with
permission errors
configuration errors
block errors
etc

I have created a /mnt/pen directory and have attempted to mount there.
Plugging the usb stick in does result in the system recognizing it.

usb stick is PNY 16 gig.

Can someone shed some light on this as I am confused....

It's hidden in the attachment information produced by your kernel.
Code:
sd0 at scsibus2 targ 1 lun 0: <PNY, USB 2.0 FD, 2.00> SCSI2 0/direct removable serial.154b00e1000000000639
sd0: 15283MB, 512 bytes/sector, 31299584 sectors, readonly

Yes I noted that in dmesg, also have received numerous error messages
that annotates that.

Since it is "new" from the store,,,,,,,how does one write at least once into the
device?

Change permissions ??
Try different mounting statement variations ??
Try different mounting loations ??

I have used the standard #mount /dev/sd0i/ /mnt/pen command with
variations as well as attempting to mount as Msdos stick

I have not been able to mount the device with multiple permatations of
the mount command to /mnt/pen without some sort of error.

The drive electronics are reporting the device is configured read only. If the device does not have a physical switch to cause it to become writable, return it to the store and request a replacement or refund.

Thankyou Mr Jggimi !
Kinda suspected that could be the case as I have many hp sticks that work well and are mounted and umounted in a straightforward fashion.
