Can anybody explain this post? I do not understand what they are talking about. I noticed that FreeBSD developers got excited about that as well.

Not sure, guess it's something to do with the fact that on amd64 there are some additional steps to take.

I know that the V86 extension aren't supported in long mode, so calling BIOS interrupts for configuring VESA VBE modes needs a small real mode emulator.

I not 100% sure myself, but I caught a few (last year) threads here and on the INTERNET that said INTEL drop support for a certain kind of open-source driver that AMD users needed. It seems that it brought a halt to FreeBSD/PcBSD future support for GNOME-3. I hope I was not completely off track ... as usual.

I think you may be confused sharris, VESA doesn't do what you think it does. It is simply a legacy fallback driver generally used on systems where the video chipset is not supported by a native driver.

I'm not sure if the following is helpful (it may not be). My reading of it was that it had something to do with mode-setting of VESA framebuffer consoles. FreeBSD already had some support for that, so I'm not sure what this does extra ... but I don't use FreeBSD.

The big news is that people running the amd64 version of FreeBSD can now use vidcontrol to create high-resolution text consoles (1024x768 for example), instead of the generic 80x25 console.

This has absolutely nothing to do with X11, graphics drivers, fall-back, etc.

This is only about the text-mode console.
