So there is nothing in dmesg if you plug in in your USB drive?

Does the drive has a light or something to show that it is connected? At least *something* should show up in dmesg. Try a different port if possible. Or test the post with another device (Your USB mouse for example).

Yes, the USB drive has a small white light on it to indicate (I suppose) it has power.

I've checked the drive on a Vista laptop and an XP machine at work.

I've used two different USB pen/thumb drives in the same port and they are fine, and I then mount them from da0s1 to /mnt/flash

When you formatted the USB stick with NTFS it was recognized. That is why I suggest to do this again. Then with FreeBSD's fdisk you change the partition type from NTFS to FAT32

My stick already has partition identifier 6, which stands for the MSDOS filesystem. Yours probably will have a '7' for NTFS as ID.
So the task is simple, change this ID from 7 to 6 .

After entering "y" here the MBR gets updated and the stick will have been marked, having an OpenBSD partition. Of course, I still need to format this OpenBSD partition on an OpenBSD sytem with newfs.

So you task is the change the NTFS sysid to 06. When that is done you format that slice with FreeBSD's newfs_msdos.

I've found with a lot of FAT-formatted USB drives, you have to manually run mount -t msdosfs /dev/da0 /mnt so that GEOM can "taste" the drive and figure out how it is formatted/partitioned. After that, devd should add the device nodes to /dev. Then you re-run the mount command using the correct slice (/dev/da0s1, for example).

In theory, trying to do it with the slice info first should accomplish the same task, but I've found it to be hit-and-miss.

However, that only works if the kernel correctly detects the USB device, and correctly sets up the umass drive, such that a da(4) device is configured.

It also depends on how you format the drive, and whether or not it has a correct MBR. If possible, try doing the fdisk and newfs from FreeBSD, instead of from Windows.

Reformatted as NTFS, then plugged it back into my FreeBSD box. Not showing up under /dev at all now...

Okay, I'll look at doing that, but I'm confused (obviously).

Why should a device which as you say even if filled with random data, turn up under /dev/da0 not do so, if I know that a ) the device functions b ) the physical port functions.

This isn't an issue I've encountered with the machine in the past (in a previous, Ubuntu incarnation).

A (new) WD Passport drive crossed my desk today, since I happend to have a FreeBSD machine running it was little trouble testing it.
It worked without problems for me, with different filesystems.

A (new) WD Passport drive crossed my desk today, since I happend to have a FreeBSD machine running it was little trouble testing it.
It worked without problems for me, with different filesystems.
Okay. So they can function. Not really of help to me currently, but I'll persevere.
