Just do pkg_add -r openjdk6 and You are ready to go

For example:

% java -jar jdownloader.jar

... and it runs flawlessly:

If You need JAVA at web browser, then do pkg_add -r icedtea-web to install the plugin.

@vermaden
This is an OpenBSD thread - were taking bets to see if you invoke your administrator privileges to correct

@daemonfowl
If java is a high priority it is less demanding in FreeBSD. It has been a while since I built java in OpenBSD and I actually don't miss it.

Here again, the FAQ can be your real friend. Java is discussed in Section 8.3.

To peruse what third-party applications are available in OpenBSD's packages/ports system, the third-party site http://openports.se/ chronicles what is available in the -current branch.

Similar information can be found for whatever OS flavor you have installed by downloading the ports tree for your OS flavor at the command-line. This is covered in Section 15.3 of the FAQ. The ports tree is not installed by default. You will need to install it manually.

While we recognize that the FAQ & related documentation is monumental to newcomers, it is the single best source of information on OpenBSD. We cannot emphasize this too strongly on how important it is for you to study the project's documentation.

Shit, I always fall into this 'trap' posting FreeBSD things on non-FreeBSD threads ...

Hi everyboday !
thanks Vermaden ..
Ocicat I'm already into ports .. enjoying Opera and a bunch of other pieces of software ..
Vermaden , thank you and it seems FreeBSD is least demanding as said Shep ..
Still OpenBSD remains my choice eventhough I am a complete beginner .. I can do without java .. thank God there is Python .. I am alluding to anki here .. an edu-oriented application which I invite you to test .. I compiled it days ago .. you can add on data and dicts and tutos ..

Default HOWTO: OpenBSD with SUN JAVA & Netbeans

BSDMagazine, February 2012, has a nice openBSD-specific article on installing NETBEANS Integrated Development Environment (IDE). NETBEANS, a JAVA based killer application, affords a GUI developer's platform for programming in C, C++, JAVA and other languages. In satifying the prerquisites for NETBEANS the HOWTO lays out HOWTO install the JAVA JRE AND JDE, of which you expressed your interest.

http://bsdmag.org/system/articles/at...pdf?1328362891

BSDMagazine is free (must register) and well worth the time to read it when it comes out.

/S

P.S.: NETBEANS is a very sweet IDE.

Thanks s2scott !
I've already registered .. the bsdmag.org is a very insteresting project .. I hope it will prosper .. as I hope they will go on supplying articles which appeal to a variety of BSD readers .. ranging from beginners to expert hackers .. also it is so interesting focusing on various BSD systems .. it is a very mature approach ..

NetBEANS rocks .. but geany is beautifully lightweight and c-oriented .. so I guess it's enough for me .. a c newbie ..

Amigos .. Who else fell in love with ranger ? :-)
It's a new package !
Quote:
DESCRIPTION
ranger is a console file manager with VI key bindings. It provides a
minimalistic and nice curses interface with a view on the directory
hierarchy. The secondary task of ranger is to figure out which program
you want to use to open your files with.
Estupendo !!!

I'm not much on file managers, but when I want something a bit like that lynx works for me.
