FVWM is a wonderful WM (N°1 for me) and TWM comes next after it, simply because it lacks a few features that FVWM has.
Everyone is horrified the first time they see GreenUglinessIncarnated, but it is very usable and can actually be customized to look prettier.

Anyway, you can always install GDM/KDM only and use as many WMs as you want, no? Or you can add several exec xyzWM entries inside ~/.xinitrc and comment them all out (using #) but the one you currently want to use.

I have been a persistent user of dwm for a long time, but are currently using and are amazed by PekWM. I also tried (w)9wm for a while but the inflexibility made me end that project.

FVWM for me. The flexibility, low footprint and documentation make it a logical choice for me.

briefly used WindowMaker but now use OpenMotif
window maker is really nice.
OpenMotif is the bare minimum you can get and it's totally customizable. I have the Shell Hacker's Guide to X and Motif that I got from an online bookstore for .50 cents. |

Default config wastes screen real estate. Remove those borders right away!

XFce4 currently on this Sun Blade 1000. Chances are that I'll switch to Blacbox. Complex window managers and desktops take away from CPU performance and memory.

The generally "maintained" blackbox-alike window managers are fluxbox and openbox, the latter being GPLv3 licensed though. If you're looking for something very minimalistic, consider cwm(1) in base, it's not in your face and has a very intuitive configuration syntax (..and an optional mouse-click menu that may be familiar to you). For example, your .cwmrc could contain: Code:
command "Mozilla Firefox" "firefox" mousebind M-2 window_lower mousebind M-3 window_resize * Put Firefox in a right click menu. * Bind alt(..M/meta) + middle mouse clicks to hide/"iconify" windows. * Bind alt + right mouse button to resize windows. There is already a default binding for the alt + left mouse button, for window dragging. |
