I use a swap partition on everything although on my workstations they are rarely if ever used. In server environments, though, especially for virtualization servers, I always use some swap. In those cases I calculate my total available virtual machines using a formula like this:

# of VMs = ((RAM+swap)/avg memory per VM)

I don't think, given the relative cheapness of RAM and harddrive space, that there's any concrete justification to configuring swap as 2 or 3 times your system RAM - not on a workstation or laptop, anyway. But in a server implementation I can see that swap is going to be used.

In all fairness, something the size of Gnome, X.Org, and most of the Mozilla based Gecko using browsers anyway are bound to have memory leaks and worse lurking around.

The question is how many remain to be found!

It's inevitable, that's why a code base should live ina "bugs will happen, let's make it easier to find and fix" mentality IMHO.

Bugs will happen - that's as close to a guarantee as can be in computers. But, perhaps the problem with many modern programs is that they tend towards the 'do everything in a single interface and include everything, including the kitchen sink' and not the traditional UNIX way of 'do one thing and do it well'.
