Default Forum conglomeration and typo fix suggestion

Shouldn't the 'PC-BSD' forum be lumped in with the 'Other BSD' forum? Just wondering what distinguishes it from the others that it has its own.

Also, the forum name/description:
Quote:
GNU/Linux
GNU/Linux in all it's flavours.
... contains a grammatical error. The possessive "its" should not contain an apostrophe. (Only the contraction does.)

It's #1 on bsdstats.org?

Fixed, thank you.

PCBSD is sort of the Ubuntu of the BSD's. That is, it aims at the newcomer, and their forums (at least they used to, I haven't been there in a long time) show amazing patience with newcomers.

It's the one that got some commercial support, and in the same way that Ubuntu was popular enough to push Dell to put Linux on some of their laptops, it's the one most likely to get BSD hardware support.

As for the it's its--shucks CarpetSmoker, many native English speakers make the same error--a tribute to the education system in my country. (On the other hand, I've made the same error, but as a typo or just not thinking, so I should shut up.)

By the way anonmie, I noted that you also thanked Admin. I'm a great believer in remembering someone's past goodness, and so, despite what's happened to bsdforums, yes, he put together something good. It's too bad that he didn't continue, but we can never really know the circumstances.

It's much better to remember the good about people than the bad.

As I said over there, nothing in this life is forever. It was an excellent forum while it lasted.

Hrm, I'm torn on the placement of PC-BSD.

On the one hand, it's based on FreeBSD, uses pure FreeBSD underneath the GUI, and could fit under the FreeBSD heading.

On the other hand, it's quite a different beast from FreeBSD, with all the GUI goodness, and could be considered separate enough to stay under Other OSes.

Same with MidnightBSD (based on OpenBSD), pfSense (based on FreeBSD), nanoBSD/picoBSD (based on FreeBSD), and similar "distros" of the BSDs. Perhaps adding a "*BSD Expansions" or "*BSD Distros" or "OSes Based on *BSD" forum under each *BSD heading would be useful?

Or we could just leave things the way they are. I'm flexible.

Maybe "OS'es derived from FreeBSD" followed by enumerating the obvious choices -- PC-BSD, DesktopBSD, etc.

Yeah, I wondered about lumping Desktop in with PC-BSD as well. I chose not to comment earlier, since their community is not as big. Still, I think it appropriate to include them as a "pre-packaged FreeBSD" in the same category. The BSD stuff isn't any different, and if the questioner wants details on how PC- or Desktop do their GUI stuff, well, this is not the right place.

I like that. An "OSes Derived From [Free|Open|Net]BSD" forum under each OS' section. Keeps each BSD lumped together, but still provides a spot for discussing the off-shoots. A much nicer name than I came up with, that's for sure.

Personally, I only see a (potential) need for FreeBSD only.

Although there are people who attempt to squeeze every last byte out of OpenBSD such that it will run in 1K, the project isn't really geared (nor we here...) to supporting individual custom kernel tweaking efforts. In fact, the project's policy is to tell people that they are completely on their own.

And although it may be more common to use NetBSD in embedded environments, we didn't have the expertise to sustain such discussions here. If nothing else, look at the amount of NetBSD traffic we currently are experiencing now. If I actually saw such a question, I would redirect them to the NetBSD mailing lists with a clear conscience.

It is different in the FreeBSD world given that there are successful projects with sizable user bases which have customized FreeBSD to preconfigured desktop products. Since the other *BSD projects don't have similar efforts, creating such parallel subforae will likely cause two of them to remain quite dormant for a very (very) long time.

This only makes sense with FreeBSD.

Ok, I "merged" the PC-BSD forum with Other BSD.
We'll see how things go and recreate the forum in the future if there is a need...

Well, there is the OpenBSD-based LOCKSS system; all the other OpenBSD-derived systems I'm aware of are either more generic-ish LiveCDs, or embedded systems.

Could be I was thinking of mirBSD? There's an m*bsd that's based on OpenBSD.

MirBSD is called MirOS now.
And yes, it is based on OpenBSD.

Anyway, here is a full list: List of BSD operating systems
