Smile Trouble burning to dvdrw part 2

hi

i hope it is ok to post here again but i thought if i replied to my own post no one would see it from the part one post?

Anyways i am beginning to hate solaris and open solaris more and more only, because i am having such bad luck writing to a dvd+rw disk.

Not that its a bad OS not at.not by a long shot.
But i thought it is the most adavanced Operating system on the planet (as they say it is)

If it is then why does BSD have everything elese
Slowaris does not have?

Even their Mplayer has no skins and looks ugly
and no repeat loop functions either.

i was asked if my drive was supported by Solaris.
well it does Write to DVD i know for sure,
but does that mean Solaris supports it?

i looked at the hardware compat list and my Model#
was not there but a different model was by the same manufacturer Lite-ON

i am using Lite-ON

i have installed dvd+rw tools package.
Nothing seems to work as i only see i can
record to DVD with cdrecord

i am about to call it quits with Solaris and get back with BSD as my Desktop some time soon, unless someone with some knowledge here can help me please?

Maybe my DvdRW Lite-ON Drive is hated by Solaris?
and only writes to Dvd and not DVD+RW.

i already ran out and bought a Ethernet card that is useable for
Slowaris and do not think i am about to run out and buy a Drive for it now if this does not work lol

i wont stop using BSD as my Server though thats for sure.

Any ideas please i really need some help with this one
a step by step maybe like a toddler walkthrough

perhaps you should read this before posting again

http://daemonforums.org/showthread.p...ghlight=newbie

as for your specific problem, it's hard to help when all you say is "nothing seems to work" - do you have any logs or error messages?

If the model isn't on solaris HCL , i'd say it has a high probability of not working. You need to understand here that sun aren't aiming to be the fastest operating system that runs on every piece of hardware. Sun sell sparc and x86 machines and as long as it runs on those machines, they're happy. Don't get upset at solaris ... just don't use it as a desktop!

hi

Thank you for trying to help.
None of that worked for my dvdrw

i have no problem as i said to write to DVD
only to dvd+rw do i have that trouble

also cdrw command not found

i can only do cdrecord for that type of recording

electric@lucid-dreamer:~$ cdrw -i /export/test.iso
bash: cdrw: command not found
electric@lucid-dreamer:~$ cdrecord test.iso
/usr/bin/cdrecord.bin: No write mode specified.
/usr/bin/cdrecord.bin: Asuming -tao mode.
/usr/bin/cdrecord.bin: Future versions of cdrecord may have different drive dependent defaults.
/usr/bin/cdrecord.bin: Continuing in 5 seconds...
/usr/bin/cdrecord.bin: No CD/DVD-Recorder device specified.
Usage: /usr/bin/cdrecord.bin [options] track1...trackn

Use /usr/bin/cdrecord.bin -help
to get a list of valid options.

Use /usr/bin/cdrecord.bin blank=help
to get a list of valid blanking options.

Use /usr/bin/cdrecord.bin dev=b,t,l driveropts=help -checkdrive
to get a list of drive specific options.

Use /usr/bin/cdrecord.bin dev=help
to get a list of possible SCSI transport specifiers.

i am sorry for acting like a child and acting up in this forum.i myself have really bad days these past few weeks.
or maybe im just a grouch at all times.

i meant no offence to anyone here.and i harldy doubt every one who joined read every thing in the agreement form.

i know i read the entire agreement form on that stupid
magic jack phone that lets you call anywhere in the world for only 20.00 a year.read it if you decide to get this thing.read it before you install its software,

i read the agreement and declined it.and those idiots
still charged me 54.00 during my 30 day trial
that i did not actually start or agreee to.

i prefer to just use vonage and pay each month.

Anyways i am a slow learner and use to be dislexis
a s a child and am often scolded for my spelling or the way i type .i am trying hard to correct that.

Assuming your drive still shows up as 3,1,0 in -scanbus, try the following.. I hope it works.

$ cdrecord -v dev=3,1,0 driver=mmc_dvdplusrw -format
$ cdrecord -v dev=3,1,0 driver=mmc_dvdplusrw test.iso
You may also wish to try the: -sao/-dao arguments.. DVD+RW format needs to be formatted.

I hope this helps

Looking over your old post, the error message is quite easy to read...

It simply means -tao (The default mode..) isn't supported by your drive, SAO informally called "DAO", or "Packet mode" are your only choices.

As said, try adding -sao or -dao the the above commands.. or -packet if they fail.

hi

When you say do you all a big favor and do search on google.does that mean you guys just dont want to be bothered and a forum is not a place to ask questions?i am not sure i remember seeing you on the other forum.
nevertheless you tried to help me.

Oh that is your signature lol Sorry

i must admit i have used google for over a week
trying to solve this problem before posting again,

So please dont think i dont bother to look for the answers myself before i post here.

And by the way when ever i am stumped on a problem i will always pick someones brains if i can not find the answers on google.

its up to them if they want to be bothered or not by someone as dumb and blind as myself.

i appreciate you assistance.

i had not been sleeping well either and just changed from gourmet coffee to kirkland this week Yuk!@!
because i bought new router and adapter lo.

i will look into all this again once im fully awake.
i do recall doing the -scanbus once before and got no where ,but i will try your sugestions soon as i feel better.

by the way does anyone know that there is no copy and paste from this forum posts?
i seem to be having some trouble copying a line of text from the post but not from the quote.

hi

Actually no but then again i probally did not read it all correctly.

i had done this once before long ago with -scanbus and did see my drives but this time the command -scanbus did not do anything unless i was supose to type something else besides that.

i will check my notes and find what i did last time with -scanbus to and see my drives and get back to you.

It doesn't matter, the arguments are parsed in any order...
$ cdrecord dev=3,1,0 -v -format -sao
Replace -sao with -packet if it fails.. but first, paste the output here in

tags.

To clarify, the -sao argument enables "Session At Once" recording.. vs the default of "Trace at once" which is not supported by your drive, (At least, not with DVD+RW media..)

-v enables extra verbosity(prints more text..) by the program which helps identify the cause of the issue.. which in your case is easy, your drive doesn't support TAO mode.

-packet apparently enables an experimental form of writing, I don't know more about this unfortunately, but it's a mode supported by your drive.

The order of arguments is rather defined, typically then can be in any way you like.. but typically the must go before the filename argument.

Uhh, I'm not sure why it's bailing out like that... just an idea, but have you tried running as root?

A device can only be mounted if it has a file system... I'm assuming you are "burning" a image to the DVD, which contains the file system right?

cdrecord interfaces with the block/character device of the drive.. I honestly don't know what's wrong with your setup, we could be lost in translation or something.

Honestly, the output of -scanbus and the message you show are contradicting each other... are you even running them on the same system? and yes.. the disk must be in the drive.

Default hi

Its ok i know you meant well and tried
i made so many mistakes since installing Solaris

#1 i had to turn Raid off to get two of my Sata Drives recognized

#2 i had to format my -Drives so that i can write to them and made them solaris2 file system slices

Unfortunatly i am not able to mount them on FreeBSD.

i have over a terra between the drives that i
would have to move.

If i was to make a file system other then NTFS or Fat32 for FreeBSD to be able to mount for read and write
i would like to know one i can use so i can use on either OS
BSD or Solaris.as i dont want them to be able to be accessed from XP unless with UFS Explorer.

So in other words if i want to write to DVD+RW i would
l have to sign into either XP or BSD and i can not mount Solaris2 file system on either not even wit UFS explorer
