Hello Daemons
As a new registered I thought I should drop a few lines here and say hello. So, Hello!
I'm a long time Mac user, but have during the years also used Linux, as a complement to my needs. But now I'm in the middle of a platform-switch (I dont like the path they've taken) - meaning I'll use Linux as my main computer and put my OS X install on a Mac mini to keep as a fallback, in case I don't find replacements for all software (eg Photoshop… though I'm working on learning Gimp.) and to keep some work I've done there. Then my Mac Pro will go. Still have my old G4 around, and it's working fine. And now when cleaning up a bit, I've decided to keep my G4 and make a nice *BSD server of it. I'm thinking mailserver... or perhaps put at my neighbours as an offsite backup server (ie, fire/theft protection). The early G4's (Sawtooth) is just ≈ 9W/16W. It should land on <≈ 40W, incl disk(s). Well, thats's the plan for now, and to finish my new computer. · Eric

Hi and welcome on board

I would say, G4 sawtooth idles at 80 watts minimum, the maximum is 360 watts (power supply limit), so the average should be 150 or 180 watts... source : Apple. https://support.apple.com/kb/TA23546...ewlocale=en_US Edit : Ooops, sorry, not the good ones. Seems the G4 sawtooth idles at 62 watts, and the max is 200 watts. Source : MacOS9lives http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php?topic=2211.0

And thanks for the input, and the links. I missed to save/download the last one, last time I saw it. At the moment I have a CPU-upgrade in it from OWC, a PowerLogix 2x1.6GHz - that one idle'd at 80-83W when I tested it a month ago (w/o display). I think I once read (somewhere) it was about 36-40W on the original setup. I haven't put the original CPU back yet, but I can report back later. The original PSU is 237W. There's a 400W unit in it now because I had a Radeon9800 Pro-card and needed more power. The 62W example on the site was with an nVidia card, and with the display connected? The original CPU (7400/450MHz in my case) is 9W/16W (≈): http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/G4ZONE/sawtooth/ The later G4 CPU models are more “hungry”. Then of course, 1-2 disks, CD/DVD, RAM etc will make it higher. The idea is to run it headless, with 1 or 2 disks, and I'm really looking fwd to see where it lands. - - - Thanks! Yes, that sounds really great.
