Anyone know if /gettext/ can be migrated to /gettext6/ gettext8/ etc?
so one can install simutaneously and not worry when
the version undergoes a major change. Then the ports bumping can occur as the ports are bumped.

Depends, if you are interested only in libraries, you can afford having various versions of gettext libraries installed at same time -> (with various results)
But having gettext[6,8] binaries, directories, and man pages is not very nice, and gettext is simply not designed for such environment. If you dont want update installed ports just because of gettext bumping, you dont need. Just keep old libntl (and others) library (for compatibility with older programs) and install new gettext (removing old gettext). And update other ports when you like. anyway, I think that something similar was in @ports mailing list. |

well, I still wonder if freebsd can be configured to use gettext in
such a way that port versions do not change simply because of dependency on gettext. Not that it takes too long to update, but that the time it does take distracts from other things the computer could be used for. I like to have the pkg_version (needs"...) output always less than about 20 ports, and a gettext bump is, here, hugely more than that amount.

You dont need to update ports, you dont need to update gettext, you can update gettext and you dont need to update 100K other ports because they changed version just because of newer gettext ...
I want also faster than light car, world without wars and blabla bla ... But this is reality. There is more than 18000 ports and it is insane to have only 20 ports for updating, ports would than become obsolete in month. |

in reference to your last sentence:
........................................ if I have 2500 ports installed, and 20 cannot be bumped, a 'grepped' pkg_version output puts out 20. So I more or less know the reason for each one. ......................................... if just gettext bumping makes that 20 >> 800, it is weeks of recompile before the number gets down to 20. .................................................. ...................... .................................................. ..................... so I surmise if getext >> /gettext8/ gettext10/ etc, instead of those weeks of recompile, I can configure ports which are already installed, make subdirectories for music, catch up on paperwork, etc etc. And if it is problematic for someone who has used FreeBSD for years and years, would not a "newer way" make the install/usage of FreeBSD easier for persons who are just starting out?? ........................ Apologies for posting here, a post to the freebsd-ports list got only one reply... maybe I am not illustrative enough in the request(s). .................................
