No Sound on 7.0 + VIA VT8237
Goal is to use S/PDIF on Asus A8V with VIA VT8237 chipset.
FreeBSD 7.0 & KDE4 Driver snd_via8233 supports chipset VIA VT8237 according to release notes. There is no digital output optical or coax nor is there analog output on any channel. Any ideas? I have used juk for mp3s, dvd audio, avi, fxtv, even streaming from pandora.com
all with the same result. Possibly more unusual is that the optical output doesn't even light. Previously I had ArchLinux on this box and with some effort it got the output to work. Additionally $ cat /dev/random > /dev/dsp produces no results. Last edited by archstudent; 14th October 2008 at 07:21 PM. |

Have you tried?
# cat filename > /dev/dsp Do you hear anything? |
Rex - I have tried various wav and mp3 files.... all of which produce no sound.
are you loading kernel module or have you compiled kernel for sound support.
again no offense if you have not done it let freebsd decide whats the best driver. try this # kldload snd_driver |
kldload snd_driver Picks out the module snd_via8233.ko
I have the module load from /boot/loader.conf which looks like #sound_load="YES" #snd_hda_load="YES" snd_via8233_load="YES" bktr_load="YES" When I log into the kde environment the mixer icon appears where it should. Killasmurf - the only sound card I have is onboard AC97 (and enabled in bios). I double checked the analog output is plugged in correctly and the digital output (both optical and coax) are also correct, yet neither produces output. |

Update: With BSD driver via_8233 I can get analog sound with
cat /wavefile > /dev/dsp However there is still no sound output when using Juk/ Dragonvideo / fxtv Additionally, in the system settings under audio, there are no output devices listed... KDE4 was compiled before an audio driver was loaded (if that makes a difference) What am I missing here to get analog playback? Last edited by archstudent; 15th October 2008 at 08:57 PM. |

did you get sound with cat /wavefile > /dev/dsp ? |

Yes, but that is the only way to get sound.
Switched to xfce and sound works with xmms / mplayer / fxtv..... very strange.
Thanks for your help! |

KDE 3? Hmmm... Did you make sure that aRts (the bane of many existences) is loading alright? (KDE4 doesn't have that kind of a problem, phonon defaults to using gstreamer as far as I can tell.)

Arts, Esound, opneal, or one of many others.... xmms, mplayer, mpg123 however uses OSS straight, they wite straight to /dev/dsp (or something like that) you can see audio jungle here http://daemonforums.org/showpost.php...80&postcount=6 Last edited by graudeejs; 16th October 2008 at 03:45 AM. |

So for apps that don't write directly to /dev/dsp, how do you direct them to get the sound out? Especially for those that don't have any configurable options?
You need to start audio system deamon....
dunno, how exactly... What environment are you planning to use? Most of them should start audio system by default.... if not, you should figure out which audio systems are being used by your apps, and google, how to start it under freebsd (can't tell really anything more.... since i don't use any environment) |
Looks like xfce for now...
Thanks for your help. |
