Default Required packages for running X

Hi all,

Decided to purchase my first laptop and I would like to run FreeBSD on it. However, it is only relatively slow compared with what I'm used to and so am hoping I can keep things to a minimum.

I have found this through google: http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/f...st/125752.html but note that it is now a year old. Are these packages the bare minimum for working X install? If not, where am I able to find this information?
${PORTSDIR}/x11-servers/xorg-server
${PORTSDIR}/x11-fonts/font-cursor-misc
${PORTSDIR}/x11-fonts/font-misc-misc
${PORTSDIR}/x11-fonts/font-alias
${PORTSDIR}/x11-drivers/xorg-video-drivers
${PORTSDIR}/x11-drivers/xorg-input-drivers

Thanks,
enpey

Installing additional packages will take only more disk space.

Here is a example of lowered to minimum x11 usage:

I would recommend just installing x11/xorg, you can then remove some packages you don't need (like some drivers, apps, etc.).

As Vermaden pointed out, installing additional packages only takes up a bit of disk space, there is no ``magic'' going on in the background, no services/daemons running.

Fair point.

Why though, does it take ~ 1min 40sec to boot into freeBSD, but in the order of 3mins to go from the console into fluxbox (via way of startx, with ~/.xinitrc reading "exec fluxbox"), while booting into fluxbox using a liveCD of SLAX or Vector Linux etc it takes 10-20 sec from the console into fluxbox (Perhaps longer, but I didn't consider timing it, so it can't have been that long). (Although it takes 2min30secs + to boot Vector Linux to console when I installed that)

Can I reduce the time it takes starting X, or is this something I will have to live with if I am to keep FreeBSD on the system?

bleh, 3 minutes, it should take 5 seconds.

Try using the xinit command instead of startx, startx also sets up xauth, which you probably don't need and can cause odd problems at times.

If that doesn't work, post your ~/.xinitrc file.

Running xinit takes a similar amount of time. Could it be anything to do with my xorg.conf? I ran xorgconfig for setup.

My ~/.xinitrc contains just the one line - "exec fluxbox"

Could also be a DNS / hostname resolving issue. Add an entry to /etc/hosts that maps the output of [cmd]hostname[/cmd] to the IP of the system.
