Default USB printers + cups requires rebuild of kernel?

I'm not sure if you would call this a bug or not, however FYI:

I'm attaching an Epson printer with `gutenprint` drivers using the `cups` printing system OpenBSD 5.5 and a GENERIC.MP kernel.

I've found I have to comment the `ulpt?` config. option from GENERIC (i.e., usb printer) and rebuild before `cups` will print.

If I don't do this then `lpstat -l` reports a status of 'Unable to send data to the printer' whenever a job is sent.

Ref. this thread http://www.mail-archive.com/ports@op.../msg51086.html - `ugen` (as used by cups) and `ulpt` devices it appears conflict (the latter not freeing the usb printer for use by the former).

Hello, and welcome!

You do not need to create a custom kernel to disable device drivers. You can use the bootloader and/or config(8), as shown in FAQ 5.8 and FAQ 5.9.

It is not a bug! You should never try to build OpenBSD kernel unless you really KNOW what are you doing. However disabling ultp driver in kernel as directed in the message is indeed necessary. You can thank for that people who think that only Linux matters and that everything else are "legacy" systems. Jggimi already told you what you need to read.

The warning (cups pkg_readme) to remove 'ulpt?' I think only appeared in 5.6 release.

Thanks for replying, my OpenBSD admin. skills are improving.

It's been in the CUPS README file since 5.1, but if I recall correctly the /usr/local/share/doc/pkg-readmes directory did not come into being until after 5.2.

OK, I stand corrected and humbled, and probably guilty of not reading the install docs carefully enough.

Don't worry. This kind of stuff is easy to miss.

We only know where to look ... now... because we've been in the same situation as you, at least once before. Some of us ... multiple times.
