No internet connection

Uname -a tells me I'm running 6.9 GENERIC#449 amd64 on a ThinkPad X220.

On Monday past I used my laptop with no problems.
On Tuesday I didn't even touch it.
Today, Wednesday I have no internet connection and I have no idea why.

When I boot up I see the message for both em0 and iwn0 got link, lease accepted but there is no connection to the internet.

The problem has to be with OpenBSD as I also have a MacBook Air which is connecting with no problem.

If anyone can suggest where I might look or what steps I might take I would appreciate it.

I would start by disabling one of the network interfaces. Move the /etc/hostname.* file to another name.

Further to my original post:
I looked in /var/log/messages and saw:
reorder_kernel: failed -- see /usr/share/relink/kernel/GENERIC/relink.log

Looking at that log file:
(SHA256) /bsd: OK
make: don't know how to make netbsd
Stop in /usr/share/relink/kernel/GENERIC

There is also a GENERIC.MP directory. Since I have a multi-processor machine
shouldn't it be looking in there?

Are you running pf? What are you rules?

Ddid any services fail at start up?

I have never touched pf.

rcctl ls failed returns nothing.

Just saw you're earlier follow up.

You are running the single processor kernel. What do you have in /?

`ls -al /bsd*`

Do you have a bsd.mp? If yes trying booting that. When you reboot, at the boot> prompt type 'boot bsd.mp'

The only files in /bsd* are:
/bsd
/bsd.booted/
/bsd.rd
/bsd.sp

I do know that every time I have run sys upgrade it has relinked to bsd.mp but apparently not this time.

Are bsd, bsd.booted and bsd.sp the same size? Usually the MP is a little bigger.

Other thing to try is to boot the bsd.rd, and if that gets a network connection, run through the upgrade to get a fresh kernel.

If none of these kernels work, I'd go back to looking at the networking.

Yes all bed's are about the same size. I tried booting with bsd.rd but it doesn't get a network connection.

Can you point me to where in networking I should look?

Yes, should be newbsd.

Can you get an MP kernel on there with some external media?

For the networking, make sure you have an IP and netmask you expect for your network with ifconfig.

Does 'netstat -rn' show a default gateway with the IP of your router and the correct network interface?

Can you ping the gateway IP?

So you installed a 6.9-Beta snapshot?

I had a similar problem yesterday, and also today. :

OpenBSD ml310e.utp.xnet 6.9 GENERIC.MP#457 amd64

As you can see this not 6.9-beta, but also not quite 6.9 release.
When booting up my box syspatch failed:

# syspatch
syspatch: Error retrieving https://cloudflare.cdn.openbsd.org/pub/OpenBSD/syspatch/6.9/amd64/SHA256.sig: 404 Not Found

The contents of the syspatch directory:

As you can see there is no 6.9 yet.
My guess is that you need firmware for your network card(s) to function and that that failed because your kernel is in the twilight zone between "snapshots" and "release".

The 6.9 snapshot installation directory structure is still there, but the 6.9 release structure (including the firmware directory) does not exist yet.

Just now I could not install firefox-esr:

# pkg_add firefox-esr-78.9.0.tgz^M

As you can see it is searching in OpenBSD/6.9/packages/amd64 directory when it has not yet been created.
I had to use the -D snap option to pkg_add to force searching the snapshot directories:

Thanks to TronDD and J65nko for taking the time to comment on my problem and offer suggestions. In the end I decided this was all beyond my capabilities and went with a full reinstall. As I have backups with rsnapshot it wasn't as bad as I feared.

I understand you prefer reinstalling. But it would be interesting, when after the reinstall you have internet access, to post the $ uname -a output.
That way we would know whether you are really running 6.9

OK, so like me you are running the latest 6.9 snapshot / release candidate, although that version has not been released officially

I have the same version/kernel:

$ uname -a
