I've used 720p and 1080p monitors through a Thinkpad's Displayport socket, using an HDMI adapter. Display usage is managed through xrandr(1).

Thats why I wrote in Off-Topic.

Those monitors *are* TVs. The Thinkpad is just one media source that can be used with them.

Since 720 and 1080p have been available for many years, and are ubiquitous, are you instead asking about 4K?

No I was asking about 720/1080p. I understand you used the Thinkpad as a HTPC.

I was asking about if you used HD set top box to view satellite channels in HD.

For the past 5 years, I was Internet-only, via cable modem. Commercial streaming services - Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon - were used, via media servers such as a Sony PS3.

Prior to that, I was an IPTV user via VDSL. (This is similar to cable, but the media is delivered via a private IP multicast service and the set top box uses Ethernet.)

Starting just this last week, I became a VDSL/IPTV user again, due to moving households. The streaming services remain in use.

In my case, the building I live in provides cable TV (although there are indications this may end in a few years). It switched from analog to digital in 2006, and analog channels are by now either gone or almost gone, as the bandwidth is needed for digital. I still use the 2006-era digital cable box. It's SD and I don't have an HD or newer TV. Can't say I miss HD, but at some point the switch will have to be made when hardware breaks down, and it will be a bit daunting to get up to speed on the "new stuff".

In my case I purchased a HD-Ready TV (720p) but using a SD set top box coz I am a bit short on cash and where I live HD set top boxes are quite expensive.
