Default new openbsd user can't connect to adsl

Hello,

I'm coming from Linux , centos.

After getting disappointed of Linux I have installed openbsd.

The first mission after install is to connect openbsd to the internet to get some things working.

But, after hours of reading and trying I can't do it.

With Linux I do adsl-setup adsl-start.

There is no documentation and no tutorial for openbsd .

It is a siemens modem C2-010 not configured as a router.

I tried many configs form the internet

but it seems that nothing works .

Is there a general tutorial for this on the net ?

Thanks.

Welcome!

Please post the entire output of dmesg(8) so we can see what the kernel is identifying. Collateral information about the system (which may be illuminating...) will also be revealed in this output.

The single best source of current information about OpenBSD can be found in the project's official FAQ:

http://www.openbsd.org/faq/index.html

Until we see what the kernel sees in the hardware, saying anything else may be premature.

I could not agree more.
  • The FAQ is the closest thing you will find to an official "How To" on any subject.
  • The man pages are the definitive documentation on the OS. However, they are not tutorials.
  • Another excellent source of tutorial information is the OpenBSD Journal -- articles published there undergo editorial review, and were accurate at the time of publication.
  • The mailing lists and their archives are an excellent source of information; participation by (some of the) developers and the Project Director may be considered semi-official or official, respectively. However, posts by us users may contain misinformation, so you must consider what you read carefully.
Unofficial "How To" sources of information that you discover via Internet searches are often out of date, incomplete, or incorrect, and are frowned upon as sources of information. That includes this site; please consider any information you receive here as unofficial and possibly incorrect. Anything you read from me, especially.

I neglected to mention that in this case FAQ Section 6 - (Networking) should be very helpful, assuming your network interface hardware is recognized by the OS kernel. That is a necessary first step, and one key reason why ocicat recommended posting your dmesg here.

(It gives us key information about the OS kernel, as well as all of your hardware.)

Default I changed the moden to router

Hi

Thanks for the replies.

I changed the modem to router so it is easy now.
even this wasn't so easy.

I have spent many hours trying to connect via dialer .

I need to install X11 and gnome.

Manuals and faq didn't help at all to me.

Also with freebsd can't connect to internet.

Absolute openbsd tall about dialup , no use.

Thanks anyway.

With respect to your X11 questions:
  • Depending upon how the following question was answered during installation (covered in Section 4.5.2 of the FAQ...), X may already be installed:
    Code:
Do you expect to run the X Window System? [yes] _
  • If X11 is installed, startx will start X with the default fvwm(1) window manager.
  • If X was not installed during installation, the X filesets can be installed after the fact. See Section 4.11 of the FAQ for details.
  • All filesets are listed in Section 4.5.4 of the FAQ. The filesets specific to X begin with 'x'. Assuming you have installed OpenBSD 5.1, these are:
    • xbase51.tgz
    • xetc51.tgz
    • xshare51.tgz
    • xfont51.tgz
    • xserv51.tgz
If you want to install Gnome,
  • Gnome is available in OpenBSD's package system. Familiarizing yourself with the information found in Section 15 is a must.
  • The gnome-session package fundamentally needs to be installed. Without the dmesg(8) information requested earlier, I will not be able to give you more precise version numbers.
Yes, it will take time to become oriented with OpenBSD's documentation, especially as a newcomer.

Default Thanks again for the reply

The problem is that I can only use lynx for surfing.

-----------------------------------------------
If X11 is installed, startx will start X with the default fvwm(1) window manager.
-----------------------------------------------

I did mark the "YES" during install.

How can I fix that and let gnome to go up and not fvwm?

I have searched through all the /etc/rc files but found nothing.

Please, post a dmesg, as has been requested.

What happens when you use the "startx" command? If anything happens at all, a log is stored in /var/log/Xorg.0.log, which you should post here also.

Oops, you get fvwm. X is working.

You need to create a .xinitrc file in your home directory, and it should have one line containing "exec gnome-session". If you have installed the gnome-session package, gnome should launch instead of fvwm on startx.

Excellent! Thank you. This dmesg is very helpful. We now know you are running 5.1-release on the i386 architecture, and that your Network Interface is an bge(4) Broadcom Gigibit Ethernet device assigned to device bge0. It is very hard to tell from what has been posted, but it appears that you may have solved your network issues on your own.

It appears you have XDM configured for login via X, rather than starting X after logging in to the console. That's fine -- you just need to have an .xsession file, instead of the .xinitrc file. You can have two names for the same file, using the ln(1) command to create a hard link:
Code:
$ cd
$ ln .xinitrc .xsession

I don't understand what you are trying to say, here. Your dmesg shows a single IDE/PATA drive, assigned to device wd0. Are you referring to mounting of its partitions, or, are you referring to attaching USB drives such as memory sticks?

Thanks.
Only the most recent release and its prior release are supported. That is currently 5.1 and 5.0. More details on the development cycle, release numbers, and the various "flavors" of OpenBSD including -stable can be found in FAQ 5.1. Spending time with the FAQ will really help. Really.

Hi Barti !
Your adsl issue reminded me of my similar old woes with ueagle driver for Sagem Fast 800 (thanks Damien Bergamini !) .. then , a cheap router made my OpenBSD journey pleasurable !
I use xinit -instead of startx- to start a window manager & I always found it good to not autostart window managers nor use xdm. First login to console mode then decide.Sometimes you just love being CLI.I have the habit to use fvwm. The xinitrc is located in /etc/X11/xinit/ .. you can edit it to fit your needs .. if you want to use kde you simply do a :
xinit /usr/local/bin/startkde
for gnome :
xinit /usr/local/bin/gnome-session
(but I dropped it as the new 3 version is too heavy to use on my acer aspire )
for enlightenment :
xinit /usr/local/bin/e16
(I made aliases for these++ in my .profile )
You can now stick to 5.1 stable .. later on you may decide to taste current.. -stable is a peaceful lake/river whereas -current is an outrageous stormy ocean .. :-) .. keep going !

Default OpenBSD is the one!

Linux becomes worst then windows every day.
It reminds me also 1998 when linux was good (redhat 4.2) .

I think freebsd will also get more like linux .

----------

I don't yet understand, How to make the system go up only to text mode?

No window manager.

What file to edit? what to write in it?

------------------------

Do you think freebsd is better to use then openbsd?
I now know that security rocks in openbsd.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenBSD_security_features

Freebsd really much better in performance ?

-----------------------------
I wanted to mount the windows disk but can't start the computer with 2 disks together.
DELL gx520 bios issue.
never mind .

Thanks.

barti, discussion is disjointed enough without adding unrelated topics. Your initial message primarily asked about X & Gnome. Let's limit discussion in this thread to those two topics. If you want to discuss FreeBSD, start a new thread.

It is currently unclear as to the state of your system. When you boot, does the system boot into text mode, or do you go directly into X?

It is not clear what this means. This could mean:
  1. The XDM Display Manager is started by rc(8) by having xdm_flags configured to something other than NO in /etc/rc.conf.local if you created the file, or /etc/rc.conf if you did not.
  2. The Gnome Display Manager was installed and you have enabled it in via the rc.d(8) subsystem, such as by adding it to the pkg_scripts variable in /etc/rc.conf.local or /etc/rc.conf.
  3. You are starting X via shell .profile or some other method.
Only you can determine which of these three things you have done. If it is a. or b., all you need to do is have a one line .xsession file in your home directory, as I already mentioned above. It performs the same function as a .xinitrc file when X is started manually. Again, if you need this:
Code:
$ echo exec gnome-session > ~/.xsession
Of course, you must have already installed gnome-session using pkg_add(1). Have you done this?

Your question on mounting foreign file systems -- if that is what it was -- is probably answered in FAQ 14.16. I recommend you read FAQ 14 in its entirety, as it will provide valuable context.

barti, I can only assume that you have two disks in your system, & you want to mount the Windows NTFS in a running OpenBSD environment. In this case, you will need to look at mount_ntfs(8). Be aware (as is stated in the BUGS section of the manpage...):
Code:
Only read support is enabled.
If you wish to discuss this further, start a new thread. The initial message in this thread asked about X & Gnome. We are limiting discussion to only these topics in this thread.
