Hello and sorry if the format of my post is not good but i'm typing from an android phone!I'm trying to connect to my wpa wireless but my dmeg is like this:
"ath0: unable to reset hardware" with a code number: once with 3719928476 and twice with 3719929212.According to the ath manual the status code is explained to /sys/dev/ic/arxxx.h which i don't know how to view it!It's not a directory and it's not a text file 'cause vi is not able to open it!How can i view that file?

The error you describe is most likely due to the fact that the file & directory are not present.

Source code to OpenBSD is not installed by default. You can find the source in src.tar.gz & sys.tar.gz on the official CD set or in pub/OpenBSD/4.9/ on a mirror. Section 5.3.3 of the FAQ gives more information for the curious.

The kernel source isn't installed by default, read the FAQ.

EDIT: ocicat beat me.

Thank you both for your replies. But i just noticed in the ath man i can't see my atheros card(ar5424) in the supported chips and the link provided by the man http://customerproducts.atheros.com/...ts/default.asp for an up to date list won't open! Also I found this: http://www.daemonforums.org/showthread.php?t=3404 so i think installing the kernel won't fix the problem! :/ I think i 'll check buy another card which is supported!

edit:Any suggestions of external cards supported by openbsd 4.9 ?

The information found in ath(4) should be considered definitive. If the card is not listed in the manpage, most likely it is not supported.

You should also consider searching through the official misc@ mailing list for discussion of the behavior others describe:

http://marc.info/?l=openbsd-misc&w=2&r=1&s=5424&q=b

...& if you consider buying a new card, you will save yourself time, energy, & resource if you search for supporting evidence first. Archive sites of the official mailing lists are given at the following:

We weren't suggesting that installing it would fix your problem, we were only clarifying why you were likely unable to find it.

If the driver is indicating failure it may be unsupported, the man page attempts to cover this but the source is definitive answer to what is supported.. understanding it is a completely different issue.

Searching through the various manpages found via:

$ man -k wireless

...can be very helpful along with the information found in misc@ discussions.

Unlike Ethernet which is a mature technology where most cards sold today will most likely work right out of the box, wireless support is still relatively young. The situation is further complicated by manufacturers being reticent about releasing information about their chipsets coupled with the frequency of new chipsets becoming available. Open Source (& especially OpenBSD...) lives by freely available documentation. Many wireless manufacturers restrict access by requiring nondisclosure agreements or nervousness about providing sensitive information to competitors. So, finding wireless support can be aggravating.

Yes, it is nice when wireless connections work, but it is a volatile market, & many get blinded by its convenience & overlook its security issues.

Good luck.
